Charles WILLIAMS Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Mar. 29 to Apr. 2, 2018.
WILLIAMS, Charles Melville (Red) C.M., S.O.M., Ph.D., F.A.I.C 1925 - 2018 With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our father, grandfather and hero, Red Williams on March 26, 2018 at Veterans' Village, Sherbrooke Community Centre, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Dad was born in Regina on March 18, 1925; he was the only child of Percy and Lottie, (née Macdonald), who were farming near Richardson, SK at that time. Percy had come from Ontario on one of the "grain trains" looking for work and Lottie, from Prince Edward Island to teach school. The family moved to Shamrock, SK. where Dad, then known as Chad, started school. Over the years they worked and farmed near Lethbridge and Calgary, AB. Dad often said how fortunate he was to have had such kind and gentle parents. Dad enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in February 1942 while living in Calgary. He took his basic training in Ottawa and was initially drafted to Dartmouth, NS before sailing overseas to join the HMCS Sioux, his home for the duration of the war. The Sioux sailed in the Atlantic and in Arctic convoys to Murmansk, a northern port in Russia. The Sioux was the first Canadian Navy Ship present on D-Day. After returning to Canada in 1945, Dad, now nicknamed Red, resumed his education, studying at the University of British Columbia and Oregon State University. In 1954, with his Ph.D. in hand, Dad came to the University of Saskatchewan where he began a career that lasted 60 years. Dad seemed to have a limitless supply of energy, maintaining a workload throughout his life that would exhaust two ordinary mortals. He travelled the highways and back roads of Saskatchewan as well as around the world. Dad was incredibly generous of his time and expertise and was a key member of the Liberal Party of Canada, worked for the United Nations, and sat on the Boards of the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, and Sherbrooke Community Centre, among others - all this while teaching at the University, and recording a daily radio spot, "Food for Thought". Dad never really retired. He kept his pace up throughout his seventies and eighties, serving as Professor Emeritus at the University of Saskatchewan and keeping an office in the College of Agriculture until the age of 89. A passionate news hound, he maintained a keen interest in science and current events, devouring two daily newspapers and professional periodicals right to the end. He received the Order of Canada in 1978 and the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 2002. In 2016, Dad was knighted for his service to France on D-Day and became a Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour. He will be lovingly remembered by his three children, Al Williams (JoAnn Organ) of Mount Pearl, NL, Catherine Williams/Greer of Saskatoon, SK, Elaine Wass (Alan) of Vancouver, BC and by his grandchildren, Olivia Cooper (d.1977), Rebecca Wass, Alison Wass, and John Greer. The family would like to thank Dr. Paul Taillon for his extraordinary care, and the amazing team at Co-op Stonebridge Pharmacy as well as the nurses, CCA's and staff of Veterans' Village, Sherbrooke Community Centre for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Sherbrooke Community Foundation, 401 Acadia Drive, Saskatoon, SK S7H 2E7, or The Kidney Foundation of Canada, Saskatchewan Branch, 2217 Hanselman Ct, Saskatoon, SK S7L 6A8 or a charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.

My condolences to Red's family. In many ways I envied the full life that he lived. Always curious. Always engaged. I knew of Red for decades but didn't really get to know him till the early 2000's. Between ethanol and agrivison we spent hours together We shared a love of agriculture , airplanes and all things SASKATCHEWAN. And then there was politics which although viewed from a different perspective I really enjoyed those discussions And finally it was Red that taught me the difference beteeen typical Scotch and the good stuff. The good stuff you never really have to swallow. To Reds family I shall toast your dads memory with great honour and respect

Red, a kind, generous individual, known to myself first as a teacher and mentor and later as an individual that gave us a chance to shine along with him in future endeavours; a true leader.
Peace be with you; Vern and Charlene Racz

Dr. Williams was a example to me of a man with a true passion for agriculture, which many of us carry in our DNA. It was an honor to know him, "Red" made a difference!

March 30, 2018

Our sympathy to your family. Our Dad, Josh Storey and your Dad spent many hours hashing over agricultural conversations and enjoyed each other's company on many occasions. Your Dad was MC at Mom and Dad's 50th anniversary in 1995.
We all knew your Dad and enjoyed our visits with him as well.
May your memories help you through this difficult time.

Our sincere condolences to Red's family - both my father and I had the awesome pleasure of knowing, being taught by , and sharing perspectives on Agriculture, more importantly Animal Agriculture over the years. Red was certainly one of the "building blocks" that served as a sound foundation to the creativity, determination, and mentorship within our Saskatchewan Agricultural sector . . . not to mention a strong Saskatchewan word within the national realm.
Peace be with you . . . the Mackay Family - homesteaders from Aberdeen.

Red is a true Saskatchewan hero, man of the soil. Accomplished, brilliant, always intellectually curious, yet sensible and unassuming. A most kind, decent man, how privileged we all were to have known you.

March 29, 2018

It was a privilege to have Red's articles appear in the Gravelbourg & District Tribune each week. His knowledge, thirst for learning and passion for our political system was inspirational for all of us. He will be missed and remembered for the great work he did at the University of Saskatchewan and across Canada. Sympathy to all the family.

A true prairie voice, full of humour and civility, friendship and stories - a few of them even true - has gone silent. How he helped, encourage and nudge. Showing how to get practical things done, for students, scholars, farm families and whole communities. It was a rare privilege to have learned from Red, a true friend and a wonderful Canadian.

We tend to think that our heroes will never leave us, but this is very, very sad news. From my first year as a student in the College of Agriculture, through my entire career, Red was there. I appreciated the personal notes of encouragement and pride that he sent to me. He always seemed to know just when to send them. A light has gone out. He will be missed.

Red Williams was a dear friend of my parents, Sergey and Elaine Fedoroff. He was also a man I will always admire and respect for his integrity, his intellect, his practical way of looking at the world, his energy and his undying optimism. He never spoke down to anyone and even took to the time to listen to me. He shared with me on a car trip we took together, his greatest achievement in life was his daughter. Many years later and after having a daughter of my own, I completely understand what he meant. RIP Red. You made a difference and will be dearly missed by many.

Red had a large influence on my life and career in the College of Agriculture. I will best remember Red's contagious level of energy fueled from his dedication to make the world a better place.

March 29, 2018

My condolences and sympathies to the Williams family and his extended family as "Red" touched us in so many ways during his distinguished career as an educator, mentor, and/or friend. My association with "Red" goes back many years as an Extension Student and follower in the print and electronic media as well as his speaking circuit.

Red was one of the most amazing people I have ever been fortunate enough to know. Brilliant but also completely down to earth. His political timing was not great and as a result Canada missed out of what undoubtedly would have been a truly great Agriculture Minister. Red never lost interest in, or stopped working on projects that he thought were important for the community. I recall running into him at an inland port conference in Halifax when he was well into his 80s. His work in animal science is known and respected around the world. From time to time he would call with advice and if I was smart, I followed it. When people speak of the greatest generation they should attach a photo of Red. My condolences to the family.

Red aroused /motivated me thru his "red meat passion" in 1967. Many careers later we worked tirelessly to bring SK an inland port for sea containers, inbound with Walmart, Cdn. Tire, Costco, outbound with our worldclass pulse crops, canola, barley malt. Tireless promoter. Motivator. Role Model. RIP, Red

When Red joined the UofS Dept of Animal Science he worked alongside my father Dr. Milt Bell (d.1998). They not only enjoyed their careers together but were such close friends for some 40 years. We were honoured to have Red give my farher's eulogy. I am saddened to hear of Red's passing but happy to have known him through my growing up years in Saskatoon.

I met Red for the first time when I started my faculty position in Animal and Poultry Science at the University of Saskatchewan. By this time he was already a legend. I was most fortunate that my new office was right next door to Red's and he would come by often and share stories and scolded me a few times that I wasn't reading enough newspapers. Most importantly, he firmly reminded me that while work was important that I needed to get my coat right now and walk with him out of the building and go home to my wife and kids. A most important lesson. He was a good friend, a great teacher, and he had a profound effect on my life. I am grateful for having known him.

Red was a true "son of the prairie soil"; one who applied his great abilities to better all of those he encountered. Wisdom, humor, tenacity and vision were core to his being. Above all, he cared: for his students; his colleagues and university; his industry; but, above all, he loved and dedicated his life to making Canada a better place.
Thanks for it all, Red; we will always remember!

Red is going to be missed. He was a straight-shooter and always called things as he saw them. Through his Monday Morning Memo, he served as mentor from a distance to many. I am proud to have known him. Peace in his next journey.

Red has been a larger-than-life hero of mine from undergrad days on. One particular highlight was a midnight trip with him from Lloydminster to Saskatoon in 1996, the evening that the SK Institute of Agrologists granted him their "Distinguished Agrologist Award". He shared many memories of rockslides and high wire river crossings during his early days doing extension in BC, adventures in Saskatchewan and much more. After the headlights died our visit was extended for a few more hours in North Battleford while a new alternator got implanted in the giant gray Riviera. I'm honored to have known him. My condolences to everyone, and thanks to his family for sharing so much of him with all of us for so long.

Red has been a larger-than-life hero of mine from undergrad days to today. I am honored to have known him. One highlight was a midnight ride from Lloydminster back to S'toon with him in 1996, the evening that the SK Institute of Agrologists presented him with their "Distinguished Agrologist Award". It was hours of memories of early extension work in BC and subsequent adventures in Saskatchewan. After the headlights went out our visit was extended for a few hours in North Battleford while a new alternator got implanted in the giant gray Riviera. Thanks for the memories.
