It is with great sadness that I have just learned of the passing of Charles Clifford Wooten, Jr. My deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends and colleagues.

I knew Charles and his family very well early on as I was a schoolmate, football teammate and best friend of "Chuck" as we all knew him then in Williamson, WV and Williamson High School. I had great respect for him, his dad Clifford and his mom Mildred. He and I were very close for some years in High School and in College as we both attended the same Universities until we went in different directions. We lost contact after he went to West Liberty College and then on to Germany in the early 70s and regrettably, never reestablished communication. However, I often thought of him fondly and how he was getting along and what he was doing.

Charles Clifford Wooten, Jr was a good man and a great friend. Rest in peace my friend!

It is with sadness that I have learned about the passing of Charles Wooten. I'd like to extend my deepest sympathies to his family, friends and former colleagues. Charles was my mentor during student teacher training in the late 1990s, and I benefitted from his love for teaching, his experience, and his wisdom. I am grateful for his guidance. Many years later, I am still a German teacher, thanks in part to the enthusiasm Charles had and shared, and that has never left me.

Charlie Wooten was my friend and colleague at Clarke Central High School for 24 years. He was a wonderful, caring man with a great sense of humor. In fact, Charlie could get away with saying things out loud that most of us could not. He was a gifted teacher. He deeply loved his students, fellow teachers and the school. There is no telling how many lives he touched. I am very sad to hear of his passing but I am thankful for his friendship and his service to Clarke Central and the Athens community. I will fondly remember both Charlie and his mother, Mildred. My deepest sympathy to his family.

I taught with Charlie at CCHS in the 80s and I've often thought of him fondly: his profane wit, his excellent German and fine academic sensibility and his healthy cynicism and lack of respect for authority. A genuinely good man. I was lucky to have known him. Some Latin for you Charlie, sit sibi terra levis.
