Charlotte B. Graham Fleming

Charlotte B. Graham Fleming, 87, of Arbor Crest Drive, Charlottesville, passed away at about Noon on Friday, August 20, 2011, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, after suffering a stroke on August 2, 2011.

She was born on August 6, 1924, in Charlottesville, the granddaughter of the late James M. Smith and Hattie Norford Smith and daughter of the late Roland Graham and Ruby S. Graham. She was the widow of Robert F. Fleming Jr., who died in August, 1981.

She graduated from St. Anne's, attended Lynchburg College for two years, and then transferred to the University of Virginia, from which she received a Bachelor of Education degree in October, 1945.

She worked at the Alderman Library and the Charlottesville public library for about a year after graduation, and then began graduate work at the University in psychology. She taught at Meriwether Lewis Elementary School and then Venable School until 1953. She taught at Robert E. Lee Elementary School and Rock Hill Academy from about 1967 until 1977, and then worked as a unit assistant at the University of Virginia Medical Center from about 1980 until 1998.

She is survived by her three sons, Robert F. Fleming III (Chip) of North Bethesda, Maryland, Richard M. Fleming of Charlottesville, and William P. Fleming and his wife, Deborah, of Catonsville, Maryland; grandsons William P. Fleming Jr. and Christopher R. Fleming; and a half-brother, Richard W. Graham, of Berlin, Maryland; and a half-sister, Anita G. Bussey, pre-deceased her.

She loved to read, and loved her pets and all of the birds and animals that came to visit her at her homes on Stony Point Road and Arbor Crest Drive.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, August 22, 2011, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her memory to the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA, 3355 Berkmar Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22901.

So sorry to hear this. I have some wonderful memories of her as my 2nd grade teacher at robert e lee. She was a very dear person and will be missed by many.

I know that my mom, Evelyn Morse, always looked forward to seeing you at work and then later when you were both retired. She really enjoyed your lunches with Cora. We always loved it when you came to our family get-togethers. You were part of the family. We will miss you so much.

"Ms Charlotte"...Remembering all the great times and phone coversation's we had over the years. You were such a wonderful friend to our Mom, to me and my family.
