Charlotte von Lilienfeld Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Feb. 1 to Feb. 2, 2012.
Charlotte Christine Sybille von Lilienfeld-Kechtel

Charlotte von Lilienfeld "Charlie" died on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at home in Albemarle County. Charlie, a long time resident of the Charlottesville area, was fifty years old. She was the youngest of five children of Ambassador and Mrs. Georg von Lilienfeld-Kechtel (Cable). She was born in Ankara, Turkey, where her father, a member of post-war Germany's diplomatic service, was stationed. Ambassador von Lilienfeld's diplomatic service for several West German Chancellors provided the basis for Charlie's extraordinary skills and interests. Following their posting in Turkey, her family moved to Washington, D.C., where her father served as German Political Minister. She also lived in Iran and Spain where her Father served as Ambassador. These postings enabled Charlie to cultivate her extraordinary linguistic skills, as she attained fluency in Spanish and Farsi as well as French and German. Charlie graduated from the American International School in Madrid and the University of Maryland in Munich. Charlie continued her education when she received a master's degree in International Relations from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. Always close to her father, Charlie accompanied him on many of his diplomatic missions. Charlie always remembered these times fondly and loved to regale her friends with fascinating tales of these experiences. In addition to being an acute observer of the international scene, Charlie was an accomplished musician. She studied the flute under Jean-Pierre Rampal and was regarded by her contemporaries as a first class flutist. Many Charlottesville residents remember fondly Charlotte's performing at the Shakespearean summer plays at the Barboursville ruins. Charlie was an avid lover of the outdoors, sports, and animals. She craved the excitement of flying down the pistes of St. Moritz as well as the thrill of clearing four bar gates with the local fox hunts. Everything she undertook was done with true passion and enthusiasm. Charlie was also interested in helping her community. Through her teaching posts in Orange and Albemarle Counties, as well as in the D.C. public schools, she made substantial contributions to those around her. Most recently she taught at The Peabody School in Charlottesville.

If one were to ask Charlie which aspect of her life she most cherished and was most proud of, it would no doubt be as a mother to her daughter, Benita. Benita, a first year student at the University of Virginia, was Charlie's pride and joy. Benita resides with her father, Charlie's former husband, Charles Bruce Berry, in Charlottesville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mother Teresa Foundation at www.motherteresafoundation.org. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, February 4, 2012, at St. Paul's Memorial Church in Charlottesville, Virginia, 1700 University Avenue.

I was so surprised that Charlotte didn´t write lately since she was always very active on facebook. She was a very special person that had a facinating life and also many sad moments. She was probably one of my special and best friends in high school. Many years ago she looked for me and I also looked for her and finally found each some two years ago. She was a person that never left indifferent to those that knew her. I remember in hgh school, she had a great loss and she wrote me a wonderful letter that she give me in hand. The beauty of those words made me cry. I still keep this beautiful letter after over 30 years. Thank you Charlie. You will always be in a special place in my heart. It was a pleasure and an honor to be your friend. My thoughts go out to your daughter, Benita, and the rest of your family. R.I.P.

I sit here on Christmas Eve with Benita, who is doing so well, as she is strong and brave like her mother, wondering if somehow Charly is watching and can see that her beloved daughter is happy and at peace. We miss you Charly! CBB

I had learned of Charlotte's whereabouts just a year or so ago from an on-line common friend. Her sister Kathy was my first love and whom we lost so long ago. I remember Charlotte from Teheran and Madrid. My heart goes out to her family and her daughter who is mentioned herein. Charlotte is again reunited with her brothers and sister.

In meinem Lieben, in meinem Lied!

Godspeed, dear friend. And give my love to Kathy.

Charlie! Charlie!

Nur wenige Monate kannten wir uns.
Nur einmal haben wir telefoniert.
Und doch waren wir uns nahe, wie es mir selten zuvor geschah!
Unser Gespräch hat mich glücklich gemacht. Dafür danke ich Dir.
Dein Verlust erreicht mich unvorbereitet. Unsere gemeinsamen Freunde und ich vermissen Dich. Wir trauern mit Deinen Angehörigen.

Gott beschützte Dich, liebe Charlie und gebe Deiner Familie Kraft!!

Requiescat in pace.

Liebe Charlie,
Allerliebste Gruesse,
Ich umarme Dich,

I am happy to have known Charlie. She was an extraordinary person. She loved Benita passionately. She left us all too soon. My prayers to the remaining family and Benita.

Being out of town makes it impossible for me to attend the Memorial Service. I am sorry not to be able to attend.

I will never forget Charlie. I knew her family in Spain. Among my favorite life memories is the trip we took together to the Hague for Model United Nations. Charlie was wise beyond her years, yet at the same time free spirited and naughty. She will always hold a dear place in my heart.

So much time has passed since our paths crossed, Charlie and Benita. So many priceless memories of Benita and my son, Patrick McElheney, attending Grymes Memorial School in Orange. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the farm in Somerset, watching Charlie lovingly attend to her horses. Benita, your mother loved you so dearly, as I'm sure you know. She's in your heart, always. Please know that all of your friends in Orange are praying for you and sending you our love.

Charlotte evidently led a very rich life for all I have read about her. She was my neighbor in the '60s in McLean, VA when we were both very young. She was one of her father's favorites, as I recall, and extremely charming.

I will attend her memorial service out of respect for the Von Lilienfeld Family with whom I have many fond memories.

So very sorry to hear of Charlie's death. We spent many hours together watching Benita and my son Alex play when they were in preschool together. Benita was her world. Many laughs were had watching them swim and ride on Benita's pig! Her stories of her family's life were almost unbelievable if it hadn't been for the pictures of their experience to prove it! She was one of a kind, one who is not forgotten, one who will be missed. So sorry for your loss Benita.

I am so sorry to hear of Charlie's passing. I have many fond memories of our times together. Even though we had lost touch the past few years. I thought of Charlie often and wondered where and how she was. Benita dear, I know you probably don't remember me, but I am sorry for your loss. If there is anything I can do, please feel free to call. Sending love and hugs.
