December 26th, 2019- something about turning 60 made me look up my former viola teacher Chester Petranek.
I remember playing under his direction as first violist in the MCYO. One concert evening I performed the Telemann Viola Concerto. I distinctly remember as I finished the last movement and the applause started, Mr Petranek saying "very good Dawn, very, very good" The words still echo in my head.
Now I think back with some sadness at the path not taken but treasure the man who inspired so many youth and breathed a life of music

It may be fifteen years later, but I will never ever forget Chester J Petranek. I was a violinist in the MCYO when he conducted the orchestra. I vividly remember the rehearsals at BCC HS. I fondly remember the concerts. Plus the First International Festival of Youth Orchestras in St Moritz, Switzerland. I also attended Camp Neyati, now the Maryland Regional Center for the Arts. He also conducted that orchestra. He helped me so much and inspired me, as he did with so many other musicians, and I went on to become a professional violinist. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. I hope time has helped to comfort and ease your loss.

I have very fond memories of my years with MCYO. Mr. Petranek did so much for music in Montgomery County. His work benefitted generations of music students, and he has left us a wonderful legacy.
