Published by Legacy Remembers on May 28, 2015.
Chi Loong Chow(周其隆), age 81, was born on November 14, 1934 in Shanghai, China to father Chow Kem Dan (周胆) and mother Cheng Hum Fong (鄭芳). He was the eighth child out of thirteen children. His father was a highly successful merchant. They all moved to Hong Kong for a better life when C.L. was 12 years old. He attended private schools through high school. He went abroad to Japan to study at Waseda University (早稻田大學). He obtained his Ph.D. degree from University of London. His father gave him a Rolex watch as a gift for all his hard work and years spent working towards obtaining his Ph.D. C.L. was very happy that his father was proud of him. C.L was later awarded the prestigious D.Sc. degree from University of London in the U.K. C.L started working as a Lecturer at Hong Kong University in 1968 and worked his way up to his goal of achieving Department Chairman of Mechanical Engineering. C.L. was internationally known in the engineering community for his expertise in Damage Mechanics. He founded the International Journal of Damage Mechanics in 1991 and has been editor-in-chief while also organizing annual international conferences. Each year he is highly-sought after as an invited lecturer to well-reputed universities around the world. C.L later became the Chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan, Dearborn and has stayed with the university for the past 20 years. He very much enjoyed teaching his students and took pride in helping them obtain academic positions or commercial jobs. He was very well-liked by his colleagues, co-workers, and students. C.L. met Grace in 1969 and they married in 1971. He had 3 children: David, Claire, and Matthew. They were born in 1972, 1973, and 1975. He liked to play with his children and give them piggyback rides. He enjoyed taking his children on long drives to the Hudson River and to amusement parks. All three of his children are doctors which he is very proud of. He has six grandsons and a new granddaughter due to be born in a few months. C.L. was physically-fit and enjoyed playing tennis each week. He liked watching sports and rooted for his hometown Michigan Wolverines and Detroit's professional sports teams. He really enjoyed going to baseball and football games with his sons, David and Matthew. C.L was a historian at heart and loved reading. His witty humor, kind heart, and warm smile will continue to live in our memories. No words can express how much his family, relatives, and friends miss him. He will live forever in our hearts and minds.
