Chloris Stevens Hertell Chloris Stevens Hertell died peacefully in her sleep at the NHC Nursing Center in Johnson City, Tenn., on Oct. 27, where she received outstanding care. Family and friends are kindly invited to the funeral service on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Ave., Westfield, N.J. Visiting will take place from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Westfield. Chloris was born on Jan. 24, 1908, in Louisville, Ky. Her parents were the Rev. Chester Stevens and mother Florence (nee Morton) Stevens. She was the oldest of eight children and survived all but her youngest brother, Eugene, of Lakeland, Fla. After graduating from Georgetown College, Georgetown, Ky., Chloris moved to New York City, where she met her future husband George, from Brooklyn, N.Y. They were married for 57 years, until George passed in 1991. They lived in Garden City, Long Island, N.Y., for 35 years, where they raised three children, Keith, Beverly, and, Glenda. Chloris and George moved to Westfield in 1985. They were members of the First Baptist Church in Westfield and were charter members of the Church-In-The-Garden, First Baptist Church In Garden City. She was a homemaker, an accomplished pianist, a dress maker, an oil painter, and a gourmet cook. A caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Chloris touched and inspired many people with her kind demeanor, strong will, and caring spirit. Her life was truly an inspiration to all that knew her. Chloris was predeceased by six brothers; a sister; her husband, George; a daughter, Beverly; and a grandson, Keith II. She is survived by a brother, Eugene, Lakeland; a son, Keith, and his wife, Kathleen, Westfield; and a daughter, Glenda, Blountville, Tenn. Chloris was the beloved grandmother to seven grandchildren, Kerry Lynne, Westfield, Darren, Richmond, Va., Kevin, Queanbeyan, Austrailia, Christopher, Patterson, N.Y., Stephanie, Watertown, Conn., Matthew, Seattle, and Shannon, Bristol Tennessee, and the great-grandmother to 11 children.
