Chris Roland DeGroff; a loving husband, selfless father, favorite teacher, and true man of integrity was finally allowed to be free of lifelong physical adversity on March 26th, 2022.
He was a dedicated educator and coach who took on extra jobs throughout the years, yet still found time to give the neighborhood kids endless rides on his motorcycle. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchild. He started every family road trip with Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild”. For years, he had a secret doughnut club with all seven kids. He loved a good practical joke and could take one as well. With a wry smile and twinkle in his eye, he would often say “I don’t get mad, I get even”.
He loved to hunt, canoe, hike, and camp in his beloved Adirondacks. He was a staunch BYU Cougar fan. A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he served dutifully. He loyally represented his love of country during the Vietnam War, fighting as part of the 101st Airborne and the 1st Cavalry.
Chris was born on October 25, 1948, in Elizabethtown, NY to Chester and Jean DeGroff. He is survived by his wife Dianna, his siblings Kurt, Ian, and Heide and his seven children: Robert, Erin, Cameron, Jesse, Julie, Todd, and Cyndee, as well as 19 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Social studies teacher. Dudley security guard. Farrah Fawcett. Degroff Basketball. Subliminal messaging. Open book tests. Vietnam stories. Accurately predicted we would have a black president before a female president. Taught me the importance of the federal reserve. Taught me that knowing the answer was important yet knowing where to find the path to the right answer was the real lesson. I would be doing his memory a disservice to not acknowledge that he was one of those teachers that made a difference if you were willing to listen and appreciate what he was telling and showing you. Godspeed Mr D on your latest adventure.

The sweetest man ever and right by his side the sweetest wife ever. Don’t often meet two people that go so well together. My honor to have known him. Sorry for your loss of this great daddy and husband.
