Christine Fruzza Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 9, 2024.
Christine Marie "Chris" Fruzza, of Pinole, California, was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who left this world suddenly on February 20, 2024.

Chris was born on July 18, 1948, to Joseph Guerrera and Alice (Marshall) Guerrera in Angwin, California, and grew up in Calistoga. She graduated from Ursuline High School in Santa Rosa in 1966 and went on to study English at the University of San Francisco. In 1972, she met the love of her life, Frank, in San Francisco. Chris and Frank had three children, Carey, Matt, and Emily. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Being a public school teacher was Chris's calling. She loved her students and colleagues and shared her passion for literature, teaching, and lifelong learning with thousands of students over the years. She began her career in 1970 at Portola Junior High in El Cerrito, where she taught for three years, and went on to teach English at Pinole Valley High School for 27 years. As a teacher, she truly valued connecting with her students and helping develop their young minds and critical thinking skills. Always devoted to the field of education, she created and taught a hands-on class for high school students interested in entering the profession. She also supported new teachers in programs dear to her heart: the Alternative Certification Partnership Program through Cal State East Bay and the Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment Program (BTSA). She was a member of the bargaining team for the United Teachers of Richmond and received an "Honoring our Own" award from the California Teachers Association in recognition of her years of service as a staunch and dedicated advocate.

In 2008, Chris retired after 37 years in education and spent her time pursuing her passions. She was very involved with the scholarship fund committee of the local California Retired Teachers Association. A voracious reader, she loved to discuss and share the books that she read. She traveled with family and friends, tried new restaurants and wines, and enjoyed spending time in Napa Valley. Chris created delicious and unforgettable meals in their home for dear friends and family. She painstakingly planned each holiday meal with love, raising table decorations to an art form. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren's activities and sporting events and also became a fan of her beloved Golden State Warriors.

Chris was predeceased by her parents, Alice and Joe Guerrera, and sister, Geraldine Guerrera. She is survived by her husband, Frank, and their three children, Carey (Pawel) Piech of El Cerrito, Matt (Abigail) Fruzza of Davis, and Emily (Frank) Coppa of Anchorage; her seven grandchildren, Damian and Kamila Piech, Elio and Gianna Fruzza, and Grace, Joe, and Frank Coppa; and her sister-in-law Jo Oliver. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Chris was laid to rest at St. Helena Cemetery. A celebration in honor of her life is being planned and will be held in May.

Ms. Fruzza was my 12th grade English teacher in 1991-92 and subsequently my college professor in the alternative certification program at WCCUSD / CSU East Bay in 2004. Finding myself between jobs and a crossroads of my career plans I saw an ad in the West County Times soliciting folks who could simultaneously teach and earn their credential. Imagine my surprise as I saw Chris at the orientation. Something went right because I'm still teaching 20+ years later... at Pinole Valley High, no less.

I appreciated Chris's expertise and infectious love of teaching. She never talked down to her students. Her infectious laugh and sense of humor made her classes fun to attend. She loved a good story, and don't leave out the good parts!

One thing that really stands out is how difficult it was for me to call her, "Chris" instead of Ms. Fruzza, even after she invited me to address her by the first name. I always thought of her as my high school teacher even though I'd graduated more than a decade previous at the time. She taught me writing skills I still use to this day. I even remember most of the books she assigned us to read that year, many of which remain favorites (MacBeth, This Boy's Life, A Doll's House, etc.)

May her memory be for a blessing.

Chris was my teaching buddy. She gave common sense advice with a laugh. I continue to appreciate her efforts at the bargaining table with UTR and the WCCUSD. My sincere condolences to her family.

Mrs. Fruzza is one of my all-time favorite teachers. I grew up with Carey & had Mrs. Fruzza as my high school English teacher. I learned so much from her. She helped me become a confident, skilled writer. I have no doubt that her calm, understanding way of treating her students, shaped the kind of teacher I am today.
I'm so sorry for your loss Fruzza Family. I'm sending all of you love & support as you deal with the loss of this amazing woman.

Chris was the ultimate Aunt! Aside from always being upbeat with a radiant smile she didn't have a superficial bone in her body and I loved that so much about her. She wasn't afraid to share her opinions, and she had strong opinions. Lucky for me I shared many values as she did when it came to education, human rights, civil rights womens rights etc etc. I always looked forward to seeing her and my uncle Frank! It goes without saying that whomever decided it was "her time" made a big mistake! Our extended family, and the whole world actually, wanted more time with Chris. What we all loved about Chris is that she was so curious and intrested in our lives. She always was ready to question me about what I was up to and my wife and kids too, she wanted to know everything she could about our lives. Her heart and love was that large. She took us all into her life with curiousity about our stories. Our love goes out to Frank and their children and grandchildren and everyone who loved Chris and is struggling with acceptance.

Mrs Fruzza was the best. She had the biggest heart. As one of her students she always went above & beyond for me as I struggled in class. One of the reason I am Successful in life today is cause of her. She never gave up on me & I will always make her proud. May she Rest In Peace. Thank you for all your dedication & hard work.
