The Butterflies'Dance
Relishing in their flourescence,
A graceful dance by night.
The beauty of Nature's pure essence,
The butterflies take flight.
As they frolic beneath the moon's soft glow,
Their wings outstretched with a delicate strength.
No time now, for care nor woe,
Their dance, they'll finish at any length.
Exhausted, their dance, finished at last,
Lulled by the song of the Whipporwill.
Inviting sweet slumber, forgetting the past,
With head under wind, their world becomes still.
Will they dance again? They will.

Upon Hearing the News about Christine
Today the sidewalk split under my feet
Creating a gulf deep enough to fall forever…
but not quite wide enough to swallow my body.
I stand straddling this shocking rent of solid ground,
unable to comprehend
the sudden shifting.
My heart has stopped,
Despite the pounding in my chest,
I can’t breathe with every breath I take.
My mind is blank, but filled with a thousand random memories,
Speeding thoughts
Colliding with the stalled ones.
Yet I know at some point I must stand on one side or the other.
The Journey will only take a second of time, but a thousand indecisions
as I shift from here to there,
And I do not trust my one leg can support me
For the instant it will take
To make the leap of faith.
Suspended over the impossible chasm,
Christine, I love you.
Christine, I miss you.
Christine surprising me with silly clown noses

Christine Nakazawa was one of the most magical people in my life and her absence is devastating. I know she is peaceful now, but those of us left behind will miss her with an ache that a few words in this space cannot adequately describe. Christine was playful, turning everything at hand into a game, providing a lens to see the world again with the fresh, fun perspective of a child. Boredom didn't exist with her, she could find the beauty and charm in just about anything and in her discovery, those around could see it, too. She had the most gorgeous, thick, long wavy hair and when it fell out after chemo, she never complained. In fact, she made having cancer seem graceful and easy. She managed to stay intact, her essence complete even as the disease dissolved her body. To those of us who knew her, we are blessed. Christine, we love you!

Christine was my friend and I miss her. She was filled with rainbows, sunshine, and a soul wanting to soar free and happy. She was also my muse. I valued her art advice. She was forever so supportive to me in my ups and downs and always in my artistic endeavors. Our talks about being Japanese-American, living as an artist, expression, family, love, pain, joy, sorrow, memories we carry with us through the generations...these talks I will treasure. Christine was beautiful emanating from the inside out. I still have her voice on a saved voice mail message and I can't believe I will never hear her "tee-hee" again to me. I know she is somewhere at peace beautifully dancing away joyfully with all her kitties. I love you Christine, and I will miss you but always hold you in my heart.
