Christine Wu-Shepherd Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 5, 2023.
Christine Ann Wu-Shepherd, 54, of El Cerrito, CA, passed away suddenly on December 28, 2022, in Huntington Beach, CA, where she had been vacationing with her husband and children. She could not be revived after suffering a heart attack.

Christine (Crissy) was born on August 8, 1968, in Detroit, MI, the daughter of Ann Wu and Chieh-Cheng (C.C.) Wu. She grew up in Coldwater, MI, graduating in 1986 from Coldwater High School where she ran track, was on the cheerleading team and was class valedictorian. She received her BA in German Studies from Northwestern University in 1990, and her law degree from Notre Dame Law School in 1993.

After law school, Crissy was a staff attorney for Legal Aid of Western Michigan for 5 years, developing close and abiding personal and professional relationships. She then opened her own law practice focused on family and criminal matters, and served as a prosecutor for Ottawa County, MI.

She met her future husband James (Jim) Shepherd in 1995, where they were active in a runners' group at the YMCA in downtown Grand Rapids, MI. Crissy and Jim participated in many sporting events over the years including the 1997 Boston Marathon, which she ran in 3 hours 15 minutes - 7:44/mile! Crissy ran Boston again in 2005.

The couple were married in Grand Rapids in May 1998. Jim's law career took them to Baltimore and then to Annapolis, MD, where their son Benton (Benny) was born in 2002. Before he came along, Crissy worked as a staff attorney with Maryland Legal Aid in Easton, MD. She took to being a mama and treasured her lively and supportive parent group in Annapolis.

The family moved to California in 2006 when Jim accepted a job in San Francisco, and the Bay Area suited them. Crissy enjoyed running in the East Bay Hills and completed the Big Sur and Half Moon Bay Marathons. Twins Max and Camille were born in Berkeley in 2010 - a joyful handful they were!

In the ensuing years, Crissy focused on family and raising her children, volunteering in various capacities at their schools. Then in 2018, she began working for the West Contra Costa County School District as a resource aide. In 2021, she enrolled in a program at Cal. State East Bay supported by WCCSD, where she trained in special education and then taught at Terra Hills Elementary in San Pablo, CA, while pursuing a masters in special education. At the time of her passing, Crissy was a semester away from completing her degree, and was enjoying the challenges and rewards of teaching special education and the tight camaraderie of her Masters candidate cohort and the Terra Hills community.

Crissy loved to bake and was an avid cookbook collector. She shared her "goods" with family, friends and co-workers on special occasions and holidays, and for no reason at all other than she had a generous soul and liked having people eat well.

Above all, Crissy loved her children and her family. She was an accomplished pianist, often playing duets with Max at his recitals; she took great joy in creating all manner of art with Camille, cheered from the sidelines at the kids' soccer games over many years, read aloud to the family at nighttime and offered unfailing support to her kids through their various trials and triumphs.

Crissy is survived by her husband Jim and their children Benny, Max and Camille, all of El Cerrito, CA; her parents Ann and C.C. Wu of Naples, FL; her brother Scott Wu and his wife Melissa Wu of Ball Ground, GA; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

A reception will be held for family and friends in the parish hall at All Souls Episcopal Church, 2220 Cedar Street, Berkeley, CA 94709 on Friday, January 13 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the church, same location, on Saturday, January 14 at 10:00 a.m., with lunch to follow on-site. Arrangements are being made to Zoom the funeral. In lieu of flowers may we suggest a contribution to your local Legal Aid Society office, in Crissy's memory.

Learning of Crissy´s passing saddens me so very deeply. She was one of my favorite classmates at ND Law...kind, considerate, loving, generous, and loyal. What a wonderful human being! I will never forget her fantastic job acting as the medical examiner witness in my Moot Court trial. The lady had acting talent, too! My deepest sympathies go out to her family. I´m very sorry for your untimely loss. However, knowing Crissy, she gave you the best of her for all the years you knew her and your memories of her will sustain you the rest of your lives.

I met Chrissy when we were in Law School together. She was kind and caring, something that stood out in the sometimes cutthroat atmosphere of law school. It did not surprise me when she went into Legal Aid, as that was the kind of person she was. I was shocked when I saw a notice of her passing in my ND Alumni magazine, and her passing is a sad day for all who knew her and those who did not have the chance to meet her.

My deepest sympathy to Christine's children and husband. Christine and so many of us were cohorts in the University Program for Masters Degree in SPED. I was saddened to hear we lost her, but I'm consolated by knowing the fact that the University is still going to honor her with her Degree in Special Education. She was a sweet lady and so kind to many. She will be missed but never forgotten.

I heard about Crissy´s passing last night and have been wondering what to write on this board ever since. There´s nothing I can write that will ease your pain or lessen the shock of losing a loved one so suddenly and so early. I am truly sorry for your loss and the terribly unfair grief you´ve endured and the journey you will have to bear in the coming weeks, months, and years. The deep pain you´re feeling is a testament of the love you have for Crissy.

Crissy was my best friend growing up. I have many fond memories of sleepovers and riding my bike to the Wu´s house during the summers to swim and hang out by the pool. She excelled at so many things and I tried in vain to keep up. But trying made me a more successful student, a more accomplished pianist, and a better person. Even though we lost touch over the years, I still thought of her, especially on Aug. 10 - the day of our firstborn´s birth. Crissy was a dedicated mother, a committed wife, a loving daughter and sister, a kind and generous friend, and a beautiful person. May time ease your pain and may her memory be a blessing.

My great sympathies to Crissy's family and loved ones. I was in 6th grade with Crissy. She, another girl, and I would often get " special assignments" because we worked ahead of the class. I can still remember how funny Crissy was, and how much fun our work was because of that! I will keep you in my prayers!

I'm so sorry about the passing of crissy. I was a high school classmate of crissy's. I always wondered what happened to her and what she went on to do in life. I'm glad to see she kept up with the things she enjoyed. She was a friend. I always loved going to her b-day parties. They were so fun! Hugs to the family. Rip crissy.

Crissy was a warm, caring and bubbly person and we liked her from the moment we met, over a decade ago. We loved many things about her, but the one thing we will always remember was how she (and Jim) brought Bill and I some home baked goodies after our beloved dog died suddenly in 2020. In spite of social distancing and masking, she cared enough to come over to our house to cheer us up and ease our pain at our loss. Crissy had a heart of gold and was one in a million. We wish send our condolences and love to Jim and the kids. We will miss her, but never forget her.

I worked with Ms Christine, as we affectionately addressed her, on campus at Mira Vista. She was kind , patient , and creative. She engaged students both inside and outside the classroom. I enjoyed hearing about the kids activities, she was always so happy when discussing her kids. The happiest and saddest day was when I had to lose her as a coworker so she could finish her studies and get her own classroom! I will miss you my friend. To Jim and the kids I´m so sorry for your loss.

I´m terribly sorry to hear this. Christine always brought the most fantastic baked masterpieces to the playground as Max and Camille played with my daughter Abby at Mira Vista. I can´t imagine what the family is going through. She was such a gentle and thoughtful person. I am so terribly sorry. We Jews say "may her memory be a blessing." In Christine´s case, there is no doubt that´s the case.

It was a joy to meet Crissy in the early years of your relationship... You two were clearly meant for each other.
I have a memory of the two of you coming to our house for dinner shortly after Katie was born. You brought her a colorful ceramic bank in the shape of a fish. (I'm guessing that Crissy picked it out??!!) Such a thoughtful gift! It has sat on Katie's bookshelf for nearly 26 years and reminds me of our friendship.
Your friends in Michigan are sending wishes for peace, comfort, and strength to you and your family.

Christine was my dear friend when I first became a mother. Together we read and discussed parenting books, growing into the most mindful parents we could be. She looked after my tot Cassia with such loving kindness that Cassia hardly noticed when I slipped away for appointments. Benny and Cassia married each other many, many times, sometimes while eating popsicles or blowing bubbles, or wearing only diapers, and we grew to cherish our friendship with Christine and Jim. Our friendship continued even after their move to the opposite coast, and we felt so fortunate to watch our younger babies growing up alongside Max and Camille, all the while enjoying delicious, nourishing meals and treats so lovingly and generously made by Christine.

It is with a heavy heart that I part with my dear friend, and Cassia and I will cherish our memories of her forever. May she rest in peace. And may Jim, Ben, Max, & Camille shine with her love forever!

Christine was my dear friend when I was just learning to be a mother, and we learned so much together, growing together into the most mindful parents we could be. She cared for my eldest Cassia so kindly that Cassia hardly minded when I slipped away for appointments. Benny and Cassia married each other many, many times, sometimes while eating popsicles or blowing bubbles, or wearing only diapers, and we grew to cherish our friendship with Christine and Jim. Even a move to the other coast couldn't shake our friendship, and we happily added them to our set of beloved friends to visit on the west coast.

It is with a heavy heart that I part with my dear friend Christine, and Cassia and I will cherish our memories of her forever. May she rest in peace. And may Jim, Ben, Camille, & Max shine in her love forever!

A generous soul filled with warmth. I met Christine and Benny as a toddler when we were in a nursing mothers group. Christine graciously hosted on occasion to give other young mothers comradeship and support those many years ago. I pray that Jim, Benny, Max and Camille are forever reminded of Christine´s gracious Spirit and that they might find Peace at this most difficult time. Love to y´all.

I met Crissy while she, Jim, and their kids were living in Berkeley, and while I didn't spend a significant amount of time with her, her spirit of generosity and her love for her family were unmistakable. I also recall her as having the kindest eyes I think I've ever seen. This is a grievous loss for Jim and the kids, and I know we are all committed to helping them in any way possible. I feel certain that her love and her care have permeated their beings, and will sustain and comfort them into the future.

I worked with Crissy when she was a staff attorney for Maryland Legal Aid's Easton office.
We became friends and shared lots of good times together. My heart is broken for Jim, the kids, and the rest of the family. She was an amazing human being and certainly one of the best baker's (cooks) I ever knew! Rest in Peace, my friend. I know you are looking after your family from on high!
