Sensei....
How I miss your mentoring, your unequaled humanity, your kind and gentle nature to all creatures, your smile, your laugh, your loyality, your wisdom, our conversations where you so subtly and skillfully could weave a life lesson within without the slightest hint of condemnation or judgement. Thoughts of these things and many, many more continue to sustain and teach me each and every day and remind me how much I miss you and how very blessed I am to have called you, friend. You will, forever, be loved.
Until then.

We know Bruce as a gentle, kind, and decent human being ~ who loved life, loved people, and dearly loved his family. We are devastated by the news of his departure, even though we know he is now in loving hands. We ask for strength for his family and God's love and guidance. Bruce will live in our fondest memories forever.

"Ua ahonui i na mea a pau,
Ua manao oiaio i na mea a pau,
Ua manaolana i na mea a pau,
Ua hoomanawanui i na mea a pau,
He mea pau ole ke aloha."

"Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love, never ends."

We love you Bruce. You will be sorely missed!

What a celebration of a life well and fully lived it must have been. Bruce was a remarkable man and I join all his friends in expressing my sorrow at his passing. The Carnans have been special in my family for many Shrine Mont years and I will be thinking of you all in the hard days ahead.

Nancy and Family,
My most sincere sympathy to all of you.
The Lord brought us together many years ago for His special plan - for me to see the Lord clearer through the light from Bruce. Bruce's light will continue to shine for many of us - to light the way ahead. And as the Lord promises, we will meet again. I am blessed to have captured Bruce's light.
Fondly,
Jim Swisher

Dear Nancy and Family, althought I have only met you a few times I feel like I know you all because of my brother Jay. Bruce was a dear dear friend to Jay and I know they had a special bond. Bruces presence will be deeply missed yet we know his spirit will be with us forever. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. With Love....Lynn Fleisher (Jay's sister)

I'm a retired RVC player (1981-1998) and always loved playing volleyball with Bruce - either alongside, or on an opposing team - it was always fun. When my oldest son was about a year old, he was extremely wary of adults, and only let my wife or me hold him - not even grandparents! One afternoon we were down at the Marshall Street RVC gym with my boy, and we ran into Bruce. It only took a few minutes of conversation before my reluctant one-year-old reached out both arms to Bruce, who lovingly scooped him up, and they both thoroughly enjoyed each other for about a half-hour. My wife and I marveled at that all the way home. My son is 22 now, and I remember that encounter like it was yesterday. Godspeed, Bruce.

I have had the good fortune to know many special people but Bruce was one of the specialest...from younger days in Hampton until June 6th and beyond. Nancy, Clare, Bess and Maggie - Bruce never met a person he could not make smile, what a wonderful thing.

Ah Bruce-ter! What would my life have been without you? Who would have peeled all of those potatoes for my wedding? Who would have so kindly offered to help me bring that crazy car back across the country, from my brothers' in Berkeley to my parents in Baltimore? Putting up with my crazy brother at Gary & Linda's wedding in Vegas? And those parties in the fan, the happy hours at Red Roof Inn? Your support when life just wasn't going my way, You were always there with a smile on your face!!!! You will always be one of the most special/precious people in my life! Your laughter, your smile...I remember when you met Nancy and how in love you were!!!! Those bright blue eyes of yours sparkled more than ever when you spoke of her! I remember the calls when your girls were born, and learning of Clare's milestones through those teen years...Thank you to the Carnan family for being there for my oldest once she started her adventures in Richmond....thank you for being "Uncle Bruce" and "Aunt Nancy". To the Carnan girls...I am sure you know that your daddy was extra special in every way! How lucky you are to have had him at home with you as you grew up. I have always cherished the stories we shared and wish that my children had such a special relationship with their daddy. How blessed I feel to have had Bruce-ter as a friend! God must have a very special plan to have called him home!!! Bruce-ter, you will be missed more than words can express! Love to you all and deepest sympathies during this time of loss. May the many special memories shared with others keep you strong and forever remind the girls and Nancy how special he was!!!!!
Love to you all...Tina Twigg-James

Nancy, what a wonderful and loving tribute to Bruce. I can’t help but think about the first time I met Bruce, we were kitchen partners at Doug’s house. We laughed so much. I will never forget his laughter and his smile.

Nancy, Clare, Bess, and Maggie: God saw Bruce getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around him and whispered "come to me." A golden heart stopped beating; hardworking hands at rest, God broke your hearts to prove to you, He only takes the best.

May the peace which comes from the memories of love shared, comfort you now and in the days ahead.

We only had the pleasure of knowing Bruce for the past 2 years as our daughters played volleyball together. I don't think you would ever find a more proud Daddy in the bleachers, but then again he expressed his proudness to each player! We will sure miss him. Nancy and Maggie, our hearts go out to you and your family during this tough time. God Bless you. ~The Mccomb's ~

Bruce Carnan was one of the nicest personalities I've met in my life. A good man, good friend, excellent family man. A man that will be sorely missed in this world. My biggest regret is not having spent more time with him and his beautiful family.
