Christopher Kelly Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 23, 2009.
Christopher William Kelly was a modest person, quiet and observant in his ways. He was trustworthy and traditional in his approach to his life and in his relationships. He was tough-minded and stubborn with the attitude that if it wasn't right it should be fixed and this earned the respect of all who knew him. He was also a young man who was meticulous, with a penchant for perfectionism in virtually everything he did. Realistic about life, he was always at the ready, prepared to take on whatever life threw at him.

Christopher was born on August 9, 1989 at Scarborough General Hospital in Scarborough, Ontario. His parents are Chris and Nancy Kelly. Christopher was raised in Toronto and Oshawa, Ontario. He was brought up to be self-confident and independent. These were traits that would serve him well throughout his life.

There were good times and bad times growing up in the Kelly household. There were the usual family and sibling squabbles. Christopher was raised with two siblings. He has a younger sister, Sarah, and a younger brother, Matthew. Christopher and his brother and sister loved going to the cottage together and enjoyed their time there. Christopher and his siblings may have had the typical rivalries while growing up but Christopher was always consistently loyal to his family.

As a young child, Christopher was never someone who needed to be the center of attention. He wasn't pushy and never forced his way into games or other activities. Christopher developed a variety of interests, though, and the things he enjoyed doing he did well. He was always curious about the world around him and was often eager to explore it. Christopher took part in soccer, track and field, karate and swimming. He was a beaver with Scouts Canada. In his spare time he liked Pokemon cards, dinosaurs, LEGO, K'Nex, fishing, drawing, reading books such as Godzilla, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, capturing and releasing wildlife, hunting for deer and grouse with his Dad. Christopher's memorable achievements included obtaining orange belt in karate, level 9 in swimming and Hunter's Safety Course and Boater's Safety Course. However, what Christopher enjoyed most was simply playing, spending time with his many friends and fishing.

While his teachers and even his friends generally thought of Christopher as being a deep thinker, he managed to have a pretty good time in high school as he made that critical transition from adolescence to adulthood. He graduated from Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School in 2009. He enjoyed some courses more than others, having favourite classes and teachers. His favourite classes in high school was science, computer science and media arts. The teacher he enjoyed learning from the most was Mr. Steve Landry. Despite his illness at age 17, he managed to complete high school and receive his High School Diploma. Christopher was a very logical person who enjoyed learning about factual information. Using his exceptional memory, he was able to learn much through observation and reading. Christopher always seemed to have a command of the facts and was able to make it seem as though he could easily master any problem that might be presented to him.

Always considered to be a solid friend, Christopher was fortunate to have numerous acquaintances and several very close friends during his life. Since he disliked making generalizations about people and preferred to draw his own conclusions based on direct observation, Christopher was able to see beneath the surface of relationships and became a true friend to those who knew him. He was committed to his friends and valued the trust he placed in them. It was not uncommon for Christopher to go beyond the call of duty for others, and friends frequently sought him out for advice because he had a knack for coming up with practical solutions to any type of dilemma. While growing up, some of his best friends were Sean, Phillip, Alejandro, Brandon, Matt, Josh and Colin. Later in life, his best friends were Jay, Josh, Kenny, Wyatt, Paul and Travis.

Christopher liked to experience things first-hand as well as learn about them. He always like to know how things worked. He enjoyed quiet times at home or away with friends and loved to listen to music, play his guitar and learn new pieces of music. Some of his other favourite pursuits were video games, watching Discovery Channel, and discussing Quantum physics with his Uncle Tom. Christopher was content to enjoy his hobbies alone but was also willing to share his interests with others.

Christopher enjoyed traveling and taking vacations. Favourite vacations included going to the family cottage at Steenburg Lake, fishing with his buddies Drew and Dylan, his brother Matthew and sister Sarah; Disney World, Punta Cana, Kirkland Lake, Ottawa, Prom camping weekend at Ferris Provincial Park and having the opportunity to have his Children's Wish granted for a trip to the Open Air Rock Festival in Walken, Germany in 2008 with Jay, Kenny, Paul and Emily.

Christopher was a lover of animals and wildlife. He loved his cat Spooky.

Christopher William Kelly passed away on Saturday November 21, 2009 at home in Oshawa, Ontario. He fought a brave battle against osteosarcoma-bone cancer. He is survived by his mother Nancy, his father Chris, his sister Sarah, and his brother Matthew. Services were held at St. Mary of the People Church. Christopher was laid to rest in Union Cemetery, Oshawa, Ontario.

Inquisitive is a word that best describes the Christopher William Kelly. He was committed to learning about science in everything around him. Most of all, he upheld his traditional values and was loyal to those he knew and loved.
