Christopher Shackleton Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Jan. 13, 2018.
Christopher Robert Shackleton Oct 25, 1952 - Jan 6, 2018 Dr. Christopher Robert Shackleton, (Oct 25, 1952 - Jan 6, 2018) passed away in the family home in Vancouver. He is survived by his wife Paula Katherine Shackleton, children Emaleah Millicent Mary, Benjamin Percival and Daniel Christopher, Ben's partner Sasha Taylor and their son Seamus Christopher, age 1; his mother Leona age 94, his father Robert pre-deceased at age 90, his sister Deborah 2 yrs his senior, his late Uncle Don Allardice's clan, and many loving cousins - especially Shirley and Don Ross, and his goddaughter Francesca Bianco. Chris grew up in North Vancouver. He was an avid alpine skier & former ski racer, an outdoorsman and fly fisherman who lived for fall trips into the mountains around Spence's Bridge with his sons, and farm life on his ranch on the Similkameen River. He shared an intellectual wonder with his daughter. Family meals involved lively discussions and debates on topics broad and esoteric. He loved 20th-century history, physics, math, and aviation. In describing Chris people who knew him use superlatives. He was driven to standards of excellence for its own sake in all that he pursued. He required no social affirmation. He was a natural leader & mentor to many. He spoke highly of his own mentors throughout his own life. He led a distinguished academic medical and surgical career with international stature as a rare breed of doctor with postdoctoral specialist certifications in 3 disciplines: Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Surgical Transplantation, making seminal contributions to the field of organ transplantation, organ retrieval and preservation in Canada and as co-founder of the British Columbia Liver Transplant Program and the first National Organ Sharing Program. At UCLA in the United States he pioneered new micro-surgical techniques in partial and live-donor liver transplantation that is used in infants, living-related and living non-related donation, and he trained surgical fellows to be liver and pancreas transplant surgeons, who now head their own programs at important academic institutions. Educated at the University of British Columbia, University of Toronto, Harvard Medical School and the London School of Economics, he was Professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles and Director of several major multidisciplinary clinical programs, and Director of the Transplant Program at Cedar Sinai LA. As a basic science and clinical investigator, he had more than 190 peer-reviewed publications in the fields of ischemic injury, immunology, immunopharmacology, transplantation and liver disease. He saved many lives: over 2000 liver transplants and 1000 kidney transplants. Upon retiring from UCLA he indulged in studies at the LSE in corporate finance, financial markets, and derivatives to meld financial acumen with his clinical experience and bench scientific background to do analysis and financial modeling of healthcare-related businesses and investment opportunities. He had a particular interest in research for Alzheimer's disease and advances in biomedical testing for HIV gp41 IgM antibodies. We are grateful to Dr. Howard Lim, the staff at the BC Cancer Agency, physician friends: Rodolfo Bianco, Deborah Millar, Cheryl McDermid, John Cassils, David Briggs and Gael McCool for tender support near the end. Chris leaves heartbroken our close network of friends self-described as "The Boat People". Memorial Service is January 17th at 1 pm at St. Mary's Anglican Church in Kerrisdale, 2490 W 37th Ave, Vancouver. Reception details announced at service. In lieu of flowers, Chris wanted to support literacy and education. Donations to the Vancouver Public Library Foundation appreciated. www.vplf.ca

I just so happened to search Dr. Shackleton on Google to see where he was working since we lost contact after my mother's surgery. I am in shock to see this news. He saved my mother, he said a few words to me that will stick with me forever. Thank you again Dr. Shackleton, forever grateful, RIP

Dr. Schackleton saved my life...I wish I was able to personally thank him again. I was only 18 years old the last time I saw him at Cedar Sinai, I now am 42, thanks to him. He was a talented man who devoted his life to saving others, mine being one of them.

I was a liver transplant patient of Dr. Shackelton's at Cedar Sinai in 1996. I had two liver transplants, had two treatments on the bio artificial liver machine and Dr. Shackelton was one of the primary doctors in my care who worked more than 12 hours to save my life. I was only 18 and was fine one day and on my death bed the next. I am here because of many doctors but he was one of the most important in saving my life. He generally cared about me and my family and I am extremely sad to find of his passing. I'm one of very many lives he saved. He dedicated his life to his patient's putting his own life on hold. I will always remember him and think of him. I only wish I was able to thank him for saving my life.

Paula and family, I was shocked and deeply saddened today when I heard this news. I worked with Chris back in his Cedars-Sinai days, managing his media interviews. What a tragic loss for your family, for the medical community and for the many patients and families he helped. My heart is with you.

I was told of Chris's death today by a good friend Dr David Reid who was also a good friend to Chris. I recall we all hunted on horseback in Princeton 35 or more years ago, on several occasions. I'm sure there are few men who could match Chris's achievements in Life and my condolences go to his wife . There has passed just a very good man who has helped hundreds and hundreds of people.

Chris, rest in peace. You were such a talented person with such a variety of interests. I remember great times together in Los Angeles and having you visit us in New York.

Although now years ago, I very much enjoyed working with Schack with our fledgling Liver Transplant program here at VGH. Those were heady and challenging times! I very much enjoyed those early cases and espirit d'corp offered by the Surgical Leaders. Chris was a joy to work with and contributed to the successful program we have now. My thoughts are with his family and friends. David Nash VGH Perfusionist

Paula and family, when I received the news I was shocked, Chris was such a Great guy and one of the most intelligent people I have ever had the privilege to know, I always called him for heath advice, love to talk about aviation, his family, father and what all of the kids were up to, I share in your deep loss and will always miss Chris.

I spent many hours in the Shackleton homes in North Vancouver, as Deborah was my friend. Seeing this photo of Chris, I see their Dad. Their home was always filled with warmth and wonder and I clearly remember Chris' own energy and warmth as a young boy. One just knew he would go on to make great contributions to this world, and clearly he did. I was saddened to learn of his passing at such a young age. My heartfelt condolences to the whole family, in particular those who touched my own life, Leona and Deborah.

Dear Paula and family,
Our truly heartfelt condolences on the loss of your beloved Chris. He was simply a remarkable human who always set the bar. He will be missed, but never forgotten. Hoping in some small way, knowing that you have the love and support of so many, will help to sustain you through this most difficult time. Sending love

My dear Paula,
I am shocked and so sorrowful for the loss of such a wonderful man, the love of your life! Chris was one of my mentors and he had a special place in my heart. I was so fortunate to work side by side with him in Liver Transplant. He was an incredibly talented surgeon and physician. His incredible career was just a piece of his soul as a human being, father, husband and friend. I will forever have a beautiful picture in my mind of the Thanksgiving he spent at my house when he was on call for Transplant and couldn't be with you all. He carved the turkey (as a good surgeon should)! I will miss him and he will always be in my heart, as will you and your family! I pray for peace and comfort in the weeks to come and send my love. May God wrap you in his loving arms and carry you! Love, Kristi Butenschoen

I ski raced with Chris back in the 60's and 70's. He always had a wonderful smile, laughter and smart wit. I am sure he will be missed tremendously.

Paula,
I was shocked to learn of Chris' passing and very saddened by it. I hope that you are holding up okay. It has ( once again with so many young people around me either dying or getting diagnosed with serious illnesses) made me very grateful for my simple, healthy life and the health of my daughters and my family. Stay strong and remember the great times...like Peak to Valley craziness in a gondola with alcohol! 2009

Paula and family,

So shocked and very saddened to hear about Chris. Although it's been a few years since I've seen you two, I have many fond memories of our ski days at Whistler, and all the festivities around the Olympics and Friday ski group adventures. He certainly led a remarkable and accomplished life, and left a distinguished legacy. My heart goes out to you.
