Claire Gordon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 1, 2012.
Claire Braverman Gordon died May 31, 2012. Born Sept. 26, 1923, she was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Harry Braverman of Quincy and graduated from Quincy High School. She matriculated at Boston University and graduated in 1945. She pursued psychometric research at the Charlestown State Prison and at the Boston State Hospital in Mattapan. She met her future husband, Dr. Edward Theodore Gordon, when they were both in high school. They were married during Dr. Gordons second year at Tufts University School of Medicine. During their nearly 67 years of marriage, they lived in New York, Minnesota and Trieste, Italy, before returning to Quincy in 1950. The family ultimately moved to Milton in 1963 where she resided for the duration of her life. In addition to raising her three sons, Mrs. Gordon was very active in the community. She was a volunteer naturalist at the Trailside Museum and delighted in taking small animals to the Milton schools. She was a member of the Parents Committee of Milton Academy. An ardent proponent of the preservation of community hospitals, she was a former board member of the Quincy Medical Center Foundation and a board of directors member of the Quincy Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Gordon was state president of the Massachusetts Medical Society Alliance. During her 1982-83 tenure of office, she brought a personal emergency response system to the South Shore area, and had the first responder mechanism installed in the Emergency Room at the Quincy Medical Center. Mrs. Gordon was active in the first campaign for making seat belts mandatory in Massachusetts. Twelve years ago, she fully endowed a lecture series at Tufts University School of Medicine. The goal of the lecture series is to explore the important relationship between physician, patient and family, and to stress to medical students and hospital residents the need to explore the humane dimensions of contemporary medical care. She is survived by her husband of nearly 67 years, the aforementioned Dr. Edward T. Gordon; and her three sons, Dr. Michael Alan Gordon and wife Mary of Sanford, N.C., Steven Roger Gordon and wife Sharon of Brattleboro, Vt., and Dr. John David Gordon and wife Dr. Allison Smith of Bethesda, Md. She is lovingly remembered by nine grandchildren and anticipated the birth of her first great-grandchild in July. Funeral services to be held Friday, June 1, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 475 Washington St., Canton. Interment to follow at Sharon Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Tufts University School of Medicine, Office of Development & Alumni Relations, 136 Harrison Ave., Boston, MA 02111.
