Clare Hanusz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 27, 2023.
Clare Marie Hanusz, a force of nature and infinite goodness, passed away at her Honolulu, Hawai'i home on February 24 after a valiant two-year battle with cancer. She was 54 years old. A tireless and devoted advocate for immigrants and the dispossessed, she is survived by her husband of 30 years, Dr. Nevzat Soguk; her beloved children, Alissandro and Derya Hanusz-Soguk; brothers Paul, Mark, and John (Melanie Breen); and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins across the country. Clare's definition of family was hardly constrained by biology, however. Anyone who had the good fortune of meeting Clare essentially became a member of her extended family, and had in Clare a friend, comrade, and champion. She is predeceased by her parents, Richard and Patricia Hanusz, and her sister, Gina Shick, from whom she inherited her deep and abiding determination to making the world a better place. If there was anyone who left the world a better place, it was surely Clare Hanusz.

A proud daughter of Toledo, Ohio, Clare grew up in the Old West End, a diverse and colorful community. Clare remained close with many of her childhood friends from that neighborhood as an adult. She attended Central Catholic High School, where she became a proud member of the self-styled "Road Crew," a group of friends who continue to gather annually to renew their friendship and engage in various shenanigans.

Clare attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, where she immersed herself in activism, student politics (RIP the FISH party), and Latin American studies. She traveled extensively throughout Nicaragua, Guatemala, and El Salvador in college, where she witnessed firsthand the devastation wreaked by American foreign policy. As an undergraduate student, Clare became well known to the political science faculty, one of whom (unbeknownst to Clare) endeavored to set her up with a dashing graduate student named Nevzat. After Nevzat dutifully attended all of Clare's slideshows of her Central American adventures, the two bonded over their love of learning and politics, and their shared determination to make a difference in the lives of their fellow human beings. After marrying in 1992, the couple moved to Phoenix. While Nevzat was working on his doctorate at Arizona State, Clare landed her dream job with the Valley Religious Task Force on Central America, where she worked with undocumented individuals in that community for the next three years.

A job offer at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa brought the young couple to Honolulu, where Alissandro and Derya were born in quick succession in 2001 and 2003. A fixture of faculty housing for more than 15 years, Clare welcomed friends and relatives from all over the world to their small apartment, where kids came and went freely, much like her childhood home in the Old West End. In 1996, Clare entered UH's William S. Richardson School of Law, following the path of her father and youngest brother, both of whom practiced law. Graduating in 1999, she specialized in immigration law, once again advocating on behalf of those fleeing violence and poverty in their home countries. Clare quickly developed a reputation for being one of the state's foremost experts on asylum law and policy and was often called upon by media outlets to explain this complex and politically charged subject. Clare also became a statewide leader in the fight for quality public education as part of the leadership of Save Our Schools. Never one to pass up a protest, Clare and her children were part of a group that occupied Gov. Linda Lingle's office after the governor cut 17 days from the 2009-10 school year as a budgetary cost-cutting measure. After working at various nonprofits and law firms in Honolulu (and relocating to Melbourne, Australia for 18 months), she opened her own law practice, Aloha Immigration, in 2017. Clare's practice became known as the go-to firm for immigrants seeking to become citizens and legal residents - or avoid deportation - in Hawai'i. She continued to forcefully advocate for individuals well after being diagnosed with cancer in December 2020, and throughout what was often a brutal course of treatment. Clare being Clare, she maintained a sunny disposition despite the pain. She never, ever complained of the pain that she suffered. Although it consumed her body, she refused to let it consume her soul. Her indomitable spirit remains.

The family will hold a celebration of Clare's life in Honolulu on March 19, what would have been her 55th birthday. Please send an email to [email protected] for details. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Clare's memory to Kesem Berkeley (https://donate.kesem.org/fundraiser/4211322); The Legal Clinic (https://thelegalclinichawaii.org/donate/); and Parents for Public Schools - Hawai'i (https://ppshi.org/donate).

In a final act of charity, Clare has chosen to donate her body to UH's John H. Burns School of Medicine for the advancement of science and medicine.

I knew Clare at Ohio U,

I don't know exactly what made me search for information about her today, but something did, and here I am discovering she is gone.

The Clare I knew was a force of nature, and it seems from this obituary that she continued on that path.

Rest in Power Clare...

I just discovered this obituary and it brought me to tears. Clare had a huge hand in helping me change the course of my life. She was my immigration attorney. She was sick when she helped me but finding this was still a shock. I´m so sorry she went through all of this. Rest in peace, Clare. I´ll remember you always and what you did for me.

I'm so sorry to learn of Clare's passing. My heart goes out to her family and friends. She was a gem. I want to share the video, "The Displaced," by Stephanie Lucas. It is from 25 or more years ago. Clare appears in it as a young advocate: Copy and paste the link: https://arizona.hosted.panopto.com/Panopto/Pages/Viewer.aspx?id=92540bd3-79dd-4c97-b10c-b08101882d0d

Roxy & I learned about Clare's death via Nezvat's plea for funding a memorial scholarship. We knew Clare and Nevi in graduate school, part of a lively interdisciplinary cohort. For a year-and-a-half, both Clare and Nevi provided a safe and invigorating oasis amidst the dark academic politics that characterizes, then and perhaps even more now, the graduate student experience. When our lives diverged, and Roxy & I went to Laredo, Texas, it was Clare and Nevi who helped us load the truck. As they waved goodbye to us, as we drove away in the Summer of 1993, we left that brief season of our lives behind us.

Having said that, what remains after 30 years are the memories. To paraphrase what that other Dion once sang: "We've seen a lot of people, and the good, they die young." Some of them include people that Nevi, Clare and I knew.

Clare was one of those "good people who died [relatively] young." She was charismatic, loving, fun, witty, playful but also very dedicated, with a considerable intellect married to an admirable moral sensibility and ethical code. By the time our lives intersected, she had already found her life's work. She had already embraced, in thought and deed, her raison d'etre. And we were all, directly and indirectly, better because of what she was, and what she became.

So, while Clare and Nevi's paths took them far away, to Hawaii and Australia and back to Hawaii, I know, both indirectly from even a perfunctory Google search, and directly, from the tenor of our interactions, that she was able, as Pablo Neruda once wrote, to work and live to her "Plenos Poderes" (Full Powers). Because such people give out light and love, as a result, their lives become what it should always be, and the extra energy and light benefits all those who experience it.

That's the distillation of my memory, Nevi. That is what the two of you, in your own ways, have done with your lives. Clare's death is a real loss, because of who she was. But you're still here, and you still off some light, visible even the eloquent and occasionally wry memorial to her life. And part of her lives through your voice.

I'm beyond heartbroken.
I just learned today, that Clare passed away.
I met Clare through my Immigration Activism/Advocacy and we were often at the same Immigration venues.
We cried together over the dportation of one woman who had a young son and teenage daughter and it was Clare's genuine, heartfelt compassion, which endeared Clare to me, along with her beautiful smile. My sincere condolences to her husband and children. Rest well, dear lady. Love, Kanani

With deepest sympathy at the loss of an awesome woman, Wife, Momma, Daughter, and Sister not only to her siblings but to many who had the priviledge of knowing Clare Marie Hanusz.
We met through work while she worked at the Hawai'i Civil Rights Commission. My son would play with Ali while Clare was pregnant with Deyra. I had the opportunity to meet Clare's parents, who adored Ali and could not wait for Deyra to arrive!
Did she have passion!
We joined forces to save our public schools and our children with their Momma's sat in Governor Lingle's office in protest.
We met again when our daughters were at NVMS.
We often ran into eachother after our kids went to high school, etc. and agreed that we would get together--unfortunately, for me that did not happen but Clare has always been my heart, even though she teased me about my big blue "I wanna be a convertible" Cadillac. She really enjoyed driving in it--I can clearly see her lovely smile and the sparkle in her eyes.
May your memories comfort you now and 4ever in the loss of your Momma and Wife.
With much alohas to Ali, Derya and Nevzat. M

Sending love and prayers to the Hanusz-Soguk family. We are so grateful to have known Clare -- she radiated positivity to everyone she met and truly was an inspiration to us all. We are very appreciative of all the times that Clare was supportive to our family and how she always welcomed Namie and Kailia into her home with open arms. Even though she was going through so much, Clare always managed to have a smile on her face when we saw her. She is the strongest woman we know and she inspires us everyday to cherish others and spread aloha.

I have known Clare for so many years, our paths intersecting again and again, and I liked that I got to see her regularly as Kaiser parents (yes public schools!) I have followed her career as a champion of the very un-championed, and cheered on her and her kids in the Lingle occupation. I am so very very glad that a few weeks ago I reached out to her personally to let her know how inspiring her cancer struggle has been for me-her optimism, her sharing, her indomitable spirit-these have shaped my choices. I have a lot of women heroes in my life, and Clare is one of the shining stars for always walking the walk. Much love to all who knew and adored her.

When Clare entered a room the happinesses quotient rose. Brilliant like many others, committed to helping others and increasing equity like some, she had a unique sense of how to lift others in their journey to being compassionate, kind problem solvers. Losing Clare in our daily lives, I am sure many will like me think in her and then ourselves. How can we share living concern with joy and humor like Clare? A challenge she leaves that will ripple beyond.

- Your leadership and service in Parents for Public Schools of Hawaii was key to our survival. Mahalo. Love you Clare.

The world has lost an indomitable fighter for justice. Trained as an immigration attorney, she selflessly fought for the rights of immigrants both in the courts and in the streets. Clare's life of "serving the people" with joy, generosity, and love - even as she battled cancer - has been a gift that will continue to inspire everyone who knew her. I will always miss Clare's welcoming smile, mischievious spirit, and constant support but her life will continue to be an inspiring example of a life well lived and myself and everyone who knew her.

It's so hard to believe, I'm really sad and heart broken right now.
The world lost a great soul, and heaven gained an angel. I was so lucky to have you for a while. Fighting alongside me on my own battle, and what makes me more sad was I couldn't be there to hold your hand and tell you that it's alright.
Ur battle is now over. Rest easy now my angel. I will be forever grateful to you.
I will carry your strength and compassion in my heart forever.
Maybe to some I'm just your client and you're my Attorney. But for me you became a friend, a confidante and a second Mom. Even to your last few weeks you made sure that I will be okay.
Thank you for all your encouragement Attorney Clare, ur the best and kindest.
My Condolences and prayers are with you and your family during this time of sorrow.
I am so sorry for your loss.
Mahalo Attorney Clare.
You will be missed.

My heart is broken. Clare was one of the most fascinating, loving, ferocious humans I've ever met. We became friends the instant we met, and I have the fondest memories of being "summer roommates" with her. She was an amazing, incomparable woman and friend, and will be forever missed. All my love and aloha to Nevi and the family.

Clare will always be a model for me of what it means to live as a bodhisattva devoted to ameliorating the suffering of all beings. Her gentle compassion and lively smile belied the fierce justice seeker inhabiting her brave, peaceful warrior´s heart. I will always cherish our lunches at the organic Queen Vic Market and our humorous "competitive" discussions over where to find the best vegan food in Melbourne. I know that, wherever you are, you will always shine your light on the path of this too often dark world.

I will miss Clare. Clare spoke Spanish, and I enjoyed talking to her in Spanish. Clare and I
represented Mexican nationals under a contract
with the Mexican Government. When she moved,
I inherited some of her cases and every one of her prior clients had only good things to say of
Clare. She was not only a good lawyer, but she
also had an ability to befriend her clients. Every
client was important to her and she would make
herself available at all hours of the day to console
them and guide them through the judicial process. She was always positive and worked very hard for her clients and won many tough cases, always with a smile and always maintaining very high professional standards.
"Que descanses en paz eterna querida amiga." (May you rest in eternal peace dear friend).
