BIG STONE GAP, Va. – Clarence E. Duff, 92, formerly of Keokee, Va., passed away on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at Lonesome Pine Hospital.
He was born in Lee County, Va., a longtime resident of Keokee and had lived in Big Stone Gap since 2000. He was a coal miner for the Westmoreland Coal Co. and later retired as a mining inspector with MSHA. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European theater. He was a member of the Big Stone Gap Masonic Lodge No. 208 AF & AM. He was of Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Flossie (Hobbs) Duff, and a brother, Deward Duff.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Mayo Dorton Duff; one son, Vaughn W. Duff and wife Suzanne of Essex Fells, N.J.; one grandson, Alexander Duff of Princeton, N.J.; one sister, Beulah Bobrosky and husband Paul of Keokee; one brother, Dewey Duff and wife Sophia of Morehead, Ky.; one sister-in-law, Anna Duff of Wise; a very special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gary and Selma Dorton of Panama City, Fla.; a very special nephew, Kie Dorton of Crestview, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends between 5 and 7 p.m. Saturday at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap. A Masonic service at 7 p.m. Saturday will be conducted by the Big Stone Gap Masonic Lodge No. 208 AF & AM. Funeral services, with Pastor Garrett Lee and the Rev. Lars C. Dorton officiating, will follow. Military rites, by local veterans of Foreign Wars, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery.
