Clark Stevens Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 7, 2024.
Clark Abel Stevens Jr., Ph.D., 89, passed away on August 1, 2024, in Sierra Vista, Arizona. Born on November 7, 1934, in Iowa City, Iowa, Clark dedicated his life to education, faith, and family, leaving a lasting impact on many.

Clark's academic journey began at Des Moines Tech, followed by earning a Bachelor's degree from Western Illinois University, a Master's from NE MO State University, and further studies at IA State University where he achieved a Doctorate. His passion for education led him to serve as the top school administrator at Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency in eastern Iowa. He also served as a school superintendent in Iowa and Arizona public schools and later as the President of the Arizona State School Board of Administrators.

A veteran, Clark served in the Army, where he embraced the discipline and camaraderie that military life offered. His service further exemplified his commitment to leadership and community.

Clark was a man of faith and exuberance, known for his ability to light up a room with laughter, song, and spirited conversations. He had a deep love and passion for God and country and would never let a military member or veteran slip by with out thanking them for their service. Clark loved to travel with his wife Jo Beth and spend summers in Logan, UT to escape the Arizona heat. An avid health enthusiast, he enjoyed swimming, hiking, and daily walks. Above all, his greatest joy was spending time with his family.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Jo Beth Stevens, brother Ron Stevens, daughters Vickie Stevens (Zastro), Cathy Meraz (Henry), and Jennifer Olson (Ronald), step-daughter Shelly Isai (Ben), along with his eldest grand-daughter Stacie Armenta (Ray), eldest grandson Caleb Griffith, and former son-in-law and friend, Frank Cartledge. His legacy continues through his ten grandchildren and step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one very special great-great-granddaughter, Milania Lavaun.

Clark was preceded in death by his parents, Clark (Sr) and Irma Stevens, son Scott Stevens, former wife and cherished friend, Lavaun Stevens, son-in-law Steven Zastro, and sister-in-law Mary Stevens.

A celebration of life service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Projects, Alzheimer's Association, and Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, organizations that were close to Clark's heart.

A special thank you to Clark's great-granddaughter, Angelique Iglesias, and all the staff at Casa De La Paz Hospice and Prestige Assisted Living for all the love, support, and care that was provided for him. We are forever grateful.
