Jean S. Zaluski

Jean Schollmeyer Zaluski, 84, of Houston, Texas, formerly of Fredericksburg, passed away peacefully as a result of complications following surgery.

Jean was born March 11, 1925, in Yonkers, N.Y., the oldest of three children of William Adam Schollmeyer and Sarah Turner. She grew up in Yonkers, graduating from high school and attending business school.

During World War II she served with the USO in New York and New Jersey, where she aided many wounded and disabled U.S. servicemen. After the war, she was introduced to, and quickly married, her eternal sailor and companion, Alfred P. Zaluski Jr., in Yonkers. She faithfully accompanied him to numerous ports and duty stations throughout Al's lifelong service with the U.S. Navy. Jean fulfilled her role as a Navy wife, raising three sons, mostly on her own, while Al was at sea nine months of the year.

The Zaluski family was stationed at the Naval Training Facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, during the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Along with many other Navy wives, Jean attended to the care and protection of her sons as all the dependents were evacuated to the United States until they were allowed to return, just before Christmas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Navy Lt. Alfred P. Zaluski, and her brother William Schollmeyer Jr.

She is survived by her brother Robert Schollmeyer and his wife, Andrea, of Dover Plains, N.Y.; her sons, Robert J. Zaluski and his wife, Tina, of Ruther Glen, Alfred P. Zaluski Jr. and his wife, Manon, of Farmington, Utah and Douglas S. Zaluski and his wife, Nedra, of Spring, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, at Covenant Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel, 1310 Courthouse Road. Burial will follow in Quantico National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, at the funeral home.
