Claudia Spiro Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 7, 2023.
Claudia Alison Spiro, loving mother, daughter, sister and friend, passed away January 4, 2023 after a brief battle with cancer. She was 66 years old. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, and one brother.

The daughter of Robert Spiro and Lorraine Shatz, Claudia spent her childhood in Altadena, where she delighted in the Rose Parade and made many neighborhood friends. She loved music and learned clarinet and piano, and she liked a good game of chess. In Altadena, she served as big sister to two siblings, Andrew and Mary. Robert's second marriage to Constance Mobley brought three more siblings, Douglas, Anne-Constance, and Nicholas (deceased), into her life.

Born March 4, 1956, Claudia could not help but become a mathematician: her birthday was 3-4-56. Claudia reportedly showed great love of numbers before the age of five, when she would ask for three-digit multiplication problems and calculate them in her head.

As a young adult, Claudia pursued higher education at Caltech, where she completed both her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Mathematics by the age of twenty-one. Within four more years, she had finished a PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, specializing in Numbers Theory. Her dissertation title was, "The Frequency with Which an Integral-Valued, Prime-Independent, Multiplicative or Additive Function of n Divides a Polynomial Function of n." In addition to publications in her own right, she is known in the field of mathematics as having an "Erdos Number of 1" for collaborating and publishing with noted mathematician Paul Erdos.

During her career, Claudia studied and taught mathematics at both the college and high school levels, and enjoyed helping her students apply mathematics to real world problems. In later years, she acquired new skills in programming and data science. On her resume, she highlighted her ability to "partner with Analysts, Software Engineers, Mathematicians, Economists, and other Data Scientists to uncover new and innovative ways to locate anomalies in massive data sets."

Claudia had great love and pride for her three children, from her marriage to Robert Silverman--Joel, Sarah, and Isaac (formerly Michael). Throughout her life, Claudia also developed and strengthened her bond with God. She was active in her church, led regular Bible study groups, and traveled on missions.

Friends and family alike remember Claudia particularly for her humor and intelligence, for the bedrock of faith that served as her foundation, and for her compassion, kindness and tremendous courage.

For a time Claudia was Dating my late younger brother Nathaniel Edward Wood, 5/7/1962 to 3/16/2020. Nate was a Graduate of Wentworth University in Boston, with a B. S. in Electrical Engineering. I myself as a person on the Autism Spectrum first met Claudia via the Asperger's Association of New England in 2006.
Nate loved her very much.

I met Claudia in the restroom at the end of the 2012 Math conference in Boston. I asked her if I could tell her the name of the Savior in Hebrew. she was delighted because she said she was Jewish. I would mail her prayer letters, and kept in touch with her till our last telephone call, Mid December, 2022.

I have just learned of Claudia passing away. I didn't know she was fighting cancer. I am so sad today, I really wished I had known and could have visited with Claudia.
Claudia was a wonderful, sweet, kind funny person who was so very smart with her love of math. We had discussed her tutoring my son in math.
I was Claudia's Realtor I helped her sell her condo and buy her new villa home. During our time together I so enjoyed talking to Claudia and learning more about her and her family. We felt another connection as she attended the same church as my Nana. My family helped her moving and we really felt blessed to have known Claudia. I know she is watching over us.

We met Claudia when we moved into our condo. She was always bright and bubbly. You never saw her without a smile. We bonded over our love of houseplants. We exchanged many of our plants and advice on their care. She will be missed greatly.

Claudia, Claudia, I will forever miss you! Thank you for empowering Samara with the knowledge of math, you made an impact on her life that we are so grateful for which you may never understand how much you have changed her world of numbers. Samara's teachers believe that because of her autism she was unable to learn the concept of algebra, but you had the power within you to find a way. Thank you my friend, thank you! Sleep on my friend, sleep until we meet again. The Njoku Family

Correction for Christopher Rob Anderson . Claudias mother´s name was LORRAINE Shatz . Alison was Claudias middle name . I can see that I am really rattled . After all the time Claudia and I spent together it´s hard to believe she is gone . Anyway , I did know Lorraine and Mary in Altadena in 1971-until Lorraine died in 1973. Mary was 3-5 years old then . The last time I talked to Mary on the phone was about 1992.

My name is Christopher ( Chris ) Rob Anderson . I met Claudia in 1971 at the Saturday Science Club at Caltech in 1971. I was 13 , she was 15 . It was a contest , I won the junior high section , she won the senior high section . We had our picture together in the Pasadena Star News newspaper June 9 ( about then ) 1971. We were close friends all through Claudias time at Caltech ( 1973-1977 ). I was a math major at Reed College class 1982 and my first graduate school was SUNY Buffalo when Claudia was first a professor there . The last time I saw Claudia in person was in Pasadena at Christmas 1984. The last time we spoke on the phone was 1997 ( or 98 ). When Claudia was at Caltech we were study partners and spent hundreds of hours studying together in room on Del Mar .For a long time I have wanted to reconnect with her . Just this morning I googled her name and found she was dead . Claudia was probably the single most influential person in my life besides my parents . I very much would like to talk , a little , about how much Claudia meant to me with anyone who knew her but especialy her son Joel or sister Mary . I knew Mary and Claudias mother Allison in 1971. Would any or all of you who see this please call me at 626-644-6244.....address 1443 E. Washington Blvd # 104 Pasadena CA 91104 ......email : [email protected]

Claudia has been a dear friend of mine for many years. She recently spent a week in mid-November staying at my house while visiting family and friends in NH and MA. There are too many memories to recount of all the times we've spent together! But I can share a couple of them.
She was part of a women's Bible study I lead when she was in NH. Her immense wisdom and deep knowledge of the Bible enriched all of us! Another precious memory is that she tutored my younger son in algebra when he got behind because he had been sick with mono. My son had loved math, but after he had mono and his teacher didn't help him, he lost his enthusiasm. With Claudia's help he got back on track. He is now a mechanical engineer, and without Claudia to restore his enthusiasm for math that wouldn't have happened. I will always be grateful to her for that, but she knew that!

I miss her greatly, but I know she is is rejoicing in heaven with her Lord Jesus!

Claudia was a very dear and special friend!! We were sisters in Christ!! We prayed together and did so many things together!! She was funny and had a great sense of humor!! She loved the Lord and she would not do anything until she prayed and asked the Lord what she should do and then waited for his answer before she acted on it! I am really going to miss her but I know she is with the Lord now and not suffering anymore!!

I first remember meeting my cousin, Claudia, in ~1970 when she, her dad, brother Andrew and sister Mary came to visit my family in Tucson, AZ.

After several decades, we got in contact again and she began joining my family for Christmas and Easter holidays. (I uploaded a picture of her with my family on Christmas 2016.). She was a sweet woman of whom my husband said "she didn´t have a mean bone in her body" and I agree!

In 2017, she invited me and two of my friends to join her for a girls weekend just outside of Busch Gardens in VA right after Thanksgiving so we could see the 6 million lights that Busch Gardens sets up at night for the holidays and also to visit Colonial Williamsburg. We had a very good time! (I uploaded two pictures from that trip: one of her and me in front of a tree with its glorious fall colors and the other of her, me and my friend Kim.)

Claudia was such a dear and kind woman. She was also a God-fearing woman who helped me witness to a special friend of the family. I miss her terribly and look forward to seeing her again "on the other side".

I can not condense
my thoughts of Claudia into one memory. She was too amazing of a human being. When I think of her I see her welcoming smile. I hear her joyous laughter. I remember what a Godly women she was and how she was always praising the Lord with great conviction. She taught scripture. She recited scripture. She lived scripture. My life was made better because of Claudia. I grew and am better from knowing Claudia. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we are sisters forever.

I've known Claudia for about 2 years through our church, Lake Shore Baptist. We enjoyed her contributions to our Sunday school class. She loved the Lord and was very Biblically knowledgeable. We will miss her greatly!
