Clifford Lowry Obituary

Clifford Aubrey Lowry, of Cullman, Alabama, died peacefully Tuesday morning, January 9, 2018 at age 86, following a stroke on December 29. After his death, the family hosted a day of visitation on January 12th at Moss Service Funeral Home. On January 13th, Aubrey was buried next to his wife of 58-years, Wynema Junkins (1932-2012). A graveside service was held at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery in Vinemont, Alabama-the same church where the couple married in 1954. Aubrey's Sunday school teacher and family friend, Lavelle Thrasher, officiated the service. Don Neil provided music and color by playing bagpipes in traditional Scottish regalia. Serving as pallbearers were; Benjamin Gaines Hawley, Charles Kirkland Hawley, Henry Sprott Long III, Christopher Michael Lalo, John Langston Lowry, Steven Harry Lowry, and Brandon Clay Thornton. Afterwards, family and friends gathered to celebrate Aubrey's life with a reception at First Baptist Church. The women of the church graciously hosted a luncheon for the immediate family following the reception. Preceded in death by his parents, Harry Raymond Lowry and Grace Phillips Lowry, his brother Dalton Douglas Lowry, sister-in-law- Joann Childers Lowry (Buford) and wife Wynema Junkins Lowry. Aubrey is survived by brothers, Harry Buford Lowry (Louise Smith McCool), Doyle Raphael Lowry (Cora England), daughters, Linda Lowry Askins (Ross), Beth Lowry Hawley (Kirk), Grandchildren, Alice Hawley Long (Henry), Mary Catherine Hawley Thornton (Brandon), Lillian Askins Lalo (Christopher), Charles Kirkland Hawley, and Benjamin Gaines Hawley. Aubrey was born on February 15, 1931 in the Capel-Phillips family home, in the Trimble-Grandview community of Cullman County. His parents Raymond and Grace raised Aubrey and his three brothers on their family farm. Aubrey was baptized and attended Bethsaida Baptist Church. He attended grade school at Grandview School, then Cullman High School, where he graduated in 1949. His undergraduate education began at Saint Bernard College, but was interrupted by the Korean Conflict during which he served in the US Air Force. Afterwards, Aubrey continued his education, graduating in 1957 from Howard College- now McWhorter School of Pharmacy at Samford University. Aubrey worked in the pharmacy of Druid City Hospital, Tuscaloosa while Wynema completed her Master's Degree in English Literature at The University of Alabama. Their first daughter, Linda, was born in 1956. In 1958, the family moved to Cullman. There, Aubrey became the pharmacy director at Cullman Hospital-now Cullman Regional Medical Center. Their second daughter, Beth, was born in 1962. In partnership with high school friend, Clifford Copeland, the two established C and L Drug Corporation and started an independent pharmacy business in 1968. Hospital Discount Pharmacies developed into five locations in Cullman and Jasper. Aubrey served as a pharmacist for over 50-years. Hospital Discount Pharmacies are still serving the community today. The Central and West Cullman locations are operated by chief pharmacists Rex Smith and Eddie Hoenig. After retirement, Aubrey enjoyed continuing education pharmacy classes and following other business interests. He was a Founding Director of First Alabama-Regions Bank from 1974-1997. Aubrey served on The Dean's Advisory Counsel of Samford's Pharmacy School while his wife served on Samford's Board of Trustees. Along with his father and brothers, Aubrey was 50-year-plus active Mason in Trimble Lodge No. 739. and the Alabama Zamora Shriner chapter. Aubrey was very interested in his world, both natural and political. He loved to travel, whether to see birds at the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge or to Cambodia to visit medical facilities and ancient temples. He and Wynema made a great team and enjoyed gardening, collecting American antiques, genealogy and maintaining the family farm in Vinemont. Together they provided invaluable support and guidance for their daughters in the upbringing of five grandchildren. Family and friends are grateful to many caregivers over the past seven years who enabled Mr. Lowry to live in his home, despite his disabilities from a serious fall in 2010. With him until the end of his life were Lauren Orth, Rhonda Raymond, Chelsea Sterling, and Amanda Ford. Louise Wooley and Angela Green maintained his home, gardens, and farm property. Deborah Wilkinson managed his finances.
