CLYDE SHOREY Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 25 to Jul. 27, 2013.

CLYDE E. SHOREY, JR. "Ev"
Clyde E. Shorey, Jr., "Ev", of Washington, DC and Cranberry Island, ME, died July 23, 2013 peacefully at home of complications from congestive heart failure. He was 91. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan Burgess Shorey, and his four children: Clyde E. Shorey III of Arlington, MA and his wife Amy Segal Shorey; David Shorey of Los Angeles, CA and his wife Nina Shorey; Alden Lattu of Washington, DC and her husband Gordon Lattu; and Katherine Herold of Arlington, MA and her former husband Nicholas Herold. In addition he is survived by his seven grandchildren: Rachel Shorey and her wife Eliza Cava; Margot Shorey; Joshua Gill and his partner Natasha Ericta; Clyde D. Shorey; Paula Lattu; Ian Herold; and James Herold. He was born in Chicago, IL, graduated from Yale University and Columbia Law School and served during World War II in the US Army Air Corps. He moved to Washington in 1963 to join USAID. After leaving USAID, he practiced law again and devoted much of his time to nonprofits, serving on several Boards: the March of Dimes 1961-1974; People For the American Way (Treasurer); the College of the Atlantic (Chair). From 1974 until retirement in 1986, he created and directed the March of Dimes Office of Public Affairs. Other board service included Kingsbury Center and Chair of the Citizens Association of Georgetown. He was devoted to his family, bringing the values of honor and commitment to his children and imbuing them with the same sense of dignity that he possessed. His wife, Joan, shared with him the sense of civic duty, participating together in local and political activities. Their warmth together was contagious to all. A memorial gathering will be held August 17, 2 p.m. at the Cosmos Club. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to People For the American Way Foundation (www.pfaw.org), or to a progressive cause of your choice.

Uncle Ev was truly one of a kind. We really enjoyed being around he and Aunt JoAnn when they were on a roll. Together they could have co-hosted a TV family comedy with their highly topical yet very entertaining wits. A great man, Ev will be missed by more than just his family.

John and I are impossibly sad, but of course more than that we just feel so lucky to have known Ev. His welcome smile and dry wit will stay with us as we keep him, and all of the Shorey family, in our hearts, our thoughts and prayers! Deepest condolences to all of you.

Ev was unique...always the consummate gentleman, but I never ever saw him without JoAnn, and so it is very difficult to imagine her without him which must be especially hard and so I feel a special sadness for her.
