Clyde Lee Wilson

WILSON, Clyde Lee, 77, passed away peacefully at home accompanied by companion and dear friend, Sue Paxton, after a battle with cancer on December 1, 2022. He is survived by his daughters, Tracey (David) and Kim (Cory); his grandchildren, Michael, Eli and Katrina; five great-grandchildren. Clyde graduated from Highland Springs High School, then went on to a 35-year coaching career at Varina High School. Clyde will be remembered by family and friends as a one of a kind dad, grandpa and great-grandpa, coach, mentor and friend. While at Varina, he would coach football, boys and girls basketball and boys and girls volleyball. He began coaching the boys' volleyball team in 1989, and after 13 seasons his record was 195-62, including a perfect 25-0 in 1999. Coach Wilson coached his team to eight District Championships, two District Tournament Championships, two Regional Championships and back to back State titles in 1999 and 2000. The 1999 undefeated season was Varina's first ever state title in any boy's sport. Coach Wilson earned the 1999 Regional and State Coach of the Year honors. His friends and family will remember his sense of humor, his love of dancing, golf, going to the beach and telling jokes. Never one to forget any of his players or students, he always had time for a chat. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A Celebration of Life will be held at Tang & Biscuit on Saturday, December 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cancer Society, VHS athletic department or the SPCA.
