Oakland: Colin Edward MacKay died Tuesday May 21, 2013 at his home, he was 89.
The only child of Edward and Olga (Petersen) MacKay, he was born in Newark, New Jersey and grew up in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, he earned his Ba, with Highest Honors in English, and MA from Brown University. In 1953 he married Gloria Dorothea Lancellotti, and began his teaching career at Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts.

In 1956, having earned his PhD at Brown, with a semester at Harvard, he joined the faculty of Colby College. A professor of English Literature, he specialized in medieval studies, with an emphasis on Geoffrey Chaucer and "The Canterbury Tales."

He and his wife traveled extensively in Europe, enjoyed classical music, loved opera, and built a house, doing most of the work. He was witty, had a great sense of humor and an extraordinary memory for old songs. He was loved and admired my many.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, and many nieces and nephews.

Professor MacKay was one of my favorite instructors at Colby. He was fascinating to talk with, and he always went out of his way to help students. His love of medieval literature was infectious, his knowledge of language was unparalleled, and his feedback on papers was immensely instructional and insightful. I have always appreciated the great role he played in my unforgettable years at Colby. He will be missed.
