Collier Barnett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 7, 2013.
Collier Barnett, 79, of Dallas, Texas, passed away on Wednesday evening, March 6 at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas surrounded by his cherished wife, family and friends.
Collier lived his life to the fullest and will be remembered by those who knew him as a man of integrity, generosity, compassion and enthusiasm. He was always full of heart. Collier graduated from New Trier Township High School in Winnetka, IL and Princeton University in 1956 and served 2 years as an officer in the US Navy from 1956 – 1958. Collier has lived in Dallas since 1978 and in recent years split his time between Dallas and his summer home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
Collier embraced challenge and distinguished himself as a successful entrepreneur, having started more than 5 successful ventures during his professional life, including Barnett TeleDirectors, Ltd; Lone Star Amusements; Auto Vend; and Payroll Central, Inc.
Collier was an avid sportsman and competitor, starting in his youngest days as a high school varsity football player and throughout his life as he participated in many sports activities. His best days were spent with friends on the golf course, and playing tennis and croquet. He loved all games - board games, card games, especially gin and bridge.
Collier was a devoted servant starting as an Eagle Scout. He served on mission trips to Honduras in connection with St. Luke's Church and is a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrews.
He was a member of the Dallas Ski Club, Trillium Links and Lake Club, Cedar Creek Racquet Club and the Cooper Aerobics Center.
Above all else, Collier loved spending time with his family and many friends.
He is survived by his wife, Gail Ransom Barnett, his children, Sally Jourden and her children Steven and Nicholas; Steven Barnett and his children Sarah and Samantha; and Hilary and Langley Steinert and their children, Nicholas, Max and Alexis.
The family would like to thank Dr. Minal Barve, Dr. Divi Puttagunta, Dr. Gregory Pollock, Dr. Riva Rahl and the Cooper Clinic for their excellent care.
A service in memory and in celebration of Collier Barnett's life will be held on Tuesday, March 12 at 1:30 pm at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 5923 Royal Lane in Dallas. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Mary Lee's House, A Child Protection and Advocacy Center in Tampa Florida, www.maryleeshouse.org; or St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Dallas, TX; or Good Shepard Episcopal Church, Cashiers, NC; or St. Paul's Anglican Church, San Miguel de Allende. Collier introduced us to golf croquet and how to make and eat Texas chili . My favorite golfing buddy at Trillium in North Carolina mountains. Never forget him trudging through the bog on #7 looking for golf balls- found them too. Also his Texas rake for retrieving golf balls from the water! Sorely missed!

Dearest Gail, we have been gone for several weeks and just learned if Collier's return to The Lord. I am so sorry for your precious loss, and that we were not here to be with you. Collier Barnett was an amazing man in his love of you, family, life and most of all in his passion and joy in God! We will always remember his courage and smiles through adversity--watching him made me cry and celebrate all at the same time. We love you, Gail, and hope to see you int the mountains soon.

From time to time The Lord creates a remarkable human whose life reflects the glory of the Lord, and to me, Collier was such a one. Anyone who spent any time in his presence would come away feeling they had been in the presence of a love greater than just human love. Collier reflected the love of Christ in the way he lived his life and the way he loved and honored others. His radiant smile was the beautiful outward manifestation of the love of His Lord, whom Collier wanted to emulate. I am grateful to have been considered a friend to Collier and my life is all the richer! John17:20-21
Thank you Collier, and his dear Gailie!

Me and my brothers call our grandfather Pops. This past Christmas, we all have him something that had to do with his personality. Nicholas gave him an origami box ornament and I think that Pops is like a box of love with no top. He always loved and gave to all his friends and family. Max gave him an ornament that was a gin rummy hand. Pops taught us how to play gin and loved to play with us. I gave pops 2 spoons- one said "his " and one said "hers" because he loved to have coffee with Gailie in the morning. I will love you, Pops, forever.

Collier's often wonderfully humorous communications on political matters have become in recent years a cherished part of our lives. My wife Ony McElroy, who reads our incoming e-mails first, would often call out to me from her office next to mine, "Here's another one from Collier!" And I would always get up and go read it because of the expectation that it would make me laugh, sometimes hilariously. Iwill so much miss those weekly communiques which have become part of our lives. It seems awfully strange that there will be no more of them. We mourn the loss of such a good and intelligent person. Collier's glowing smile was the same the last time we saw him and his lovely Gail, of whom he was so proud and grateful, here in Tucson as it was the day we graduated from Princeton together in 1956. I hope to be in his presence once more, some day. John McElroy.
Everyweek I looked forward to hear from
Collier and think that behind his message was his wonderful smile. His last e-mail included his pictures from the town in Mexico that he and Gail liked so much. We were hoping to make that trip with him and Gail. However, he is now looking at all of his friends again with a smile. Bless him! Ony McElroy

Collier was a very special person. His deep love of family, friends and country as well as his spirituality was reflected in his wonderful caring conversations and emails. Gail, there are too many fond memories to begin to mention all of them. I remember the first time you asked us to your 50s party at the landing. Collier showed me how to eat Texas chili. Open a bag of Cheetos, pour in the chili, shake it up and eat it! Then, the last time we came over for dinner and played bridge, we actually won, and that was a first! The bog hole at Trillium golf will never be the same without Collier fishing out all those golfballs! Then, there was your 65th birthday and on and on.
All those memories we will cherish forever. Our loss is heavens gain now and it's comforting to know he is safely with his Savior.
Collier was such a wonderful and caring person, and one we are sorely going to miss. Our prayers are with you.

Collier, when he smiled, his entireface smiles. A fun memory I have of is of him lining up a golf shot on Trillium. With great fan fair and bravado, as I watched through my camera lens, he showed me exactly how it ought to be done. With the force of a hurricane, he drove that ball like lightning straight into the pond. We had a great laugh. I did a painting of him from the photo I took of this moment. He and his smile, humor and self efacement will be missed.
