I was just in visiting Laurie and the gang at the RBCC and was greatly saddened to hear of the tragic death of your son, Collin. I can only begin to imagine how painful it must be, but hope you are strengthened by the care and support of family and friends, and by all the loving memories you have of Collin.

Dear Pete and Connie,
Jan and I are very sorry for your tragic loss. I remember the backpacking trip to Russell Pond with you, all your kids including Collin, the Wilhelms and their girls. A tragedy such as your's casts a long shadow over such happy times. But sometimes the effort of remembering helps, a little at least. The lines from A.E. Housman's "To An Athlete Dying Young" come to mind: "Today, the road all runners come,/ Shoulder-high we bring you home,/ And set you at your threshold down,/ Townsman of a stiller town." The rest of us can only keep climbing the mountain.

Dear Bates family,
I never knew Collin. I am simply someone who heard of this tragic loss, and this situation has touched my heart.
I couple years ago I also lost my brother, so I can certainly understand the pain his sisters, Jessica and Alyssa, are experiencing.
Many, many years from now, when we are old and gray, we will be united with our brothers.
May God strengthen you and your entire family, during this time.
(There are also some excellent support groups out there, which may help to bring you some peace.)

Peter, Connie, Jessica and Alyssa, I didn't know Collin well but whenever I would see him at football games or homecoming, I would always notice him with his boyish grin and twinkle in his eyes. After attending the funeral, it's obvious that he touched many lives in his short time here; I just wish I had had the opportunity to know him better. My thoughts are with you.

the bates family,
I am so sorry for the loss of a son and a brother, i didnt know collin very much, but i did know that he was loved by everybody, he was just one of hose kids who everybody got along with, he was an amazing football player, and i am honored to have played on the same team as him, i can remember befor every game, we would all be in the gym listening to our pre-game music, and collin would be walking around with his headphones on and he was ready to beat whoever we were playing. he will be missed by everybody who surounded him. it will take time to overcome what has happened, but he will forever be in our harts.

I didn’t know Collin very well, as I only had the chance to see him on a few occasions while I was home on leave. Julie, Joe, Fred and Rose Mason always spoke highly of him. I will never forget that he played a key role in Julie and my wedding, as an alter server, along with Jessica. They made that day extra special for us. I know what it is like to lose a brother. Take comfort in knowing that he is in a better place now. Collin will be deeply missed by every one.
