Cory Sutherland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 22, 2025.
Cory David Sutherland, 70, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on March 24, 2024, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was born on October 16th, 1953, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to the late William and Grace Sutherland.

Cory was a talented mechanical and electrical engineer who had a successful career at the engineering services firm started by his father, WJ Sutherland and Associates and later contributed his expertise at Hallberg Engineering. Known for his meticulous work and innovative problem-solving skills, Cory left a lasting impact on his colleagues and the engineering community.

Outside of his professional life, Cory found joy in the great outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, and embarking on adventures with his beloved wife and soul mate, Karen. Cory cherished time spent with his sons Ryan, Eric, and Grant, as well as his stepson Dustin. He especially enjoyed happy hours and long conversations with his brother Jock. Family was paramount to Cory.

After retiring in August 2021, Cory relocated to Colorado to enjoy the beauty of the mountains with Karen. Together they built their dream home at the Rocking CK Ranch in Salida, Colorado-a place where his legacy will continue to be felt by all who visit.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him for his kindness, hard work, robust laugh, and entertaining storytelling.

Cory is survived by his wife Karen; sons Ryan (Courtney), Eric, and Grant; stepson Dustin; grandchildren Lucy, Henry, and George Sutherland; brothers Jock (Julie) and Bill (Pam) Sutherland; goddaughter and niece Kate (Mike) Fretschel, nieces Jennifer (Mark) Kral and Laura (Chris) Braun Pardo, nephew Adam Braun (Kim Sauvageot) as well as many great nieces and nephews.

A joint memorial to celebrate Cory's life will be held on Sunday, March 23 at 2pm at Karen's home in Salida, Colorado and in St. Paul, Minnesota at the Fort Snelling Visitor Center and Museum on Saturday, March 22 from 2pm to 4pm. May Cory's memory bring comfort to his loved ones.

So very sorry for your loss. I never met Cory, but he raised a wonderful son who is married to my beautiful niece Courtney.

So sorry to hear of Cory's passing. I worked with Cory at Hallberg Engineering for 13 years. He was very passionate about his work as well as mentoring others. He wanted his projects to stay on budget and on time and worked very hard to see projects were completed successfully. He traveled far and wide for work to do site visits and to make sure things were being done right. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He will be missed by many.

I will always carry the memories of us listening to the blues playing live in Chicago and drinking a bucket full of beer. Cory epitomized the saying, "You don't have to have the blues to play (or listen to) the blues".
