Professor Tolstoy was a great man. He was my Russian teacher at Annapolis (US Naval Academy). I learned more than just the Russian language. He taught me about life and my Slavic background. I spoke to him before I graduated in 1980. He said to me, "you´re somewhat pompous and you need to read and study Aristotle." I will always remember his wisdom, his warmth and his super intellectualism.

My professor and friend at Annapolis. From him I gained a thousand insights to life and the humane traditions of Russia. Vyechnaya Pomyats. I will be forever grateful for his instruction in many fields. Praying for Suzanne and their sons.

My sympathies to Suzanne and the Tolstoy family. Vladimir and his old world graciousness will be missed. Garfield Terrace has lost one of its pillars.
