Craig Handzel Obituary

Visit the Legacy Remembers website to view the full obituary.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Craig Patrick Handzel, who left us far too soon on July 20, 2025, at the age of 52.

Born on May 17, 1973, Craig was a man full of life, laughter, and love. He had a passion for adventure and found freedom on the open road riding his motorcycle. A talented cook, Craig was known for preparing delicious meals that brought people together. He cherished the outdoors and often spent time hiking, finding peace and joy in nature. His warm spirit, quick wit, and infectious laugh made him a beloved presence in the lives of everyone who knew him.

Craig proudly served as the Vice President of the Veteran's Motorcycle Club in Ayden, North Carolina, and was a dedicated member of previous chapters in Clarksville, Tennessee, and Schenectady, New York. His commitment to camaraderie, service, and brotherhood was unwavering.

Craig also had a deep love for the English language. He wrote heartfelt, clever poems for every wedding, birthday, and important life event, capturing moments with humor and grace. He never missed a chance to correct your grammar-and he made sure you knew it, always with a wink and a smile. His words brought laughter, reflection, and a lasting sense of connection to those around him.

He is survived by his children, Danielle, Samuel (and his wife Isabella), and Kaitlyn (and her partner Brady Wilcox), who were the light of his life; his former wife and lifelong friend, Christie Handzel; his father, Joe Handzel; his brother, Eric Handzel, Eric's wife Elaine, and their daughters Ellie and Eden; and his loving partner, Lisa Wooten. He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless close friends who were like family to him.

Craig was predeceased by his mother, Maureen Handzel (Dowd), whose love and memory he carried with him always.

A celebration of Craig's life will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Clonan Post 1000 American Legion, 3454 Oneida St., Chadwicks, NY 13319, where family and friends will gather to honor the life of a man who meant so much to so many.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Veterans Association to help raise awareness for veteran's mental health.

Though Craig's time with us was cut short, his spirit will continue to ride with us in every sunset, every shared laugh, and every meal made with love.

To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

I recently met Craig at my brother's funeral (Jim Mallow) in N.C. They both belonged to a Veteran's Motorcycle Club. He was there for my brother and his wife in so many ways. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing.

To Craigs family and loved ones.. I wish all of you peace and strength through the loss of a truly great human being. I have never had one single encounter with Craig that I was not submerged in laughter and also respect for a person that was unapologetically himself. He is a true legend and will never be forgotten.
