Craig Leonard Johnson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 6 to Jan. 12, 2023.
Craig Leonard Johnson, age 69, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at his home in Nash County. He was the 4th child of Mattieleene Smith Johnson and the late Charles Leonard Johnson. He was a graduate of Rocky Mount Academy and attended Louisburg College. At the age of 18 while attending Louisburg College, he was diagnosed with a malignant tumor on his spine causing him to become a paraplegic, being confined to a wheel chair the remainder of his life.

Craig continued his education, graduating from East Carolina University. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree he worked at Pitt Memorial Hospital as a medical social worker. His employment in the rehabilitation department gave him the opportunity to encourage others with disabilities. He was a great example of what one could accomplish in spite of his or her disability. After several years at Pitt Memorial Hospital, he attended Barry University in Florida where he received a Master's degree in Medical Social Work. Craig also became a certificated counselor for drug addiction, alcoholism, and abuse.

As a certified counselor, Craig worked several years in both Chattanooga, Tennessee and then in Connecticut. He later retired and returned to his home town of Rocky Mount. His family was very proud of all his accomplishments. Craig was appointed by Governor Hunt to the Governor's Advisory Council for Handicapped Accessibility.

Craig's disabilities never stopped him from living a full independent life. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing as often as he could. Craig loved Christmas and the joy of giving gifts. This determined son and brother persevered through many challenges life threw his way without complaint. His love for life never wavered and was an inspiration to all who met him.

Craig is survived by his mother, Mattieleene Smith Johnson; brothers, Charles Andrew Johnson (Laura) and Joel Johnson (Linda); sisters, Gail Johnson Kennedy, Irene Johnson Dowdle (Leighton) and Jean Johnson Boseman (Joel); numerous nephews and nieces; great nephews and nieces; and his closest companion, Ivy, his Golden Retriever.

A graveside service was held at 11:00AM on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Culpepper Family Cemetery, Rocky Mount, NC 27803. The family received friends immediately following the service.
