Cristóbal Matus Doña

Cristóbal Matus Doña passed away on September 3, 2024, at his home in in San José, California, surrounded by many of his children and grandchildren. He was 97 years old.

He was born in Managua, Nicaragua on April 6, 1927. In 1947 he married his sweetheart, Eugenia Moreno, in Managua and one year later they welcomed into the world the first of their eventual eleven children, four of whom were born in Nicaragua and the rest in the United States.
As the young family involved itself in the ministry of First Baptist Church of Managua, they believed God had a calling on them to be involved in some capacity in church ministry. During this same time, Cristóbal was working as a driver for the U.S. Consulate in Managua where he met and befriended a consular official. As the young couple's desire was to serve God in a greater capacity, they concluded that emigrating to the United States could provide greater educational opportunities toward that end. And so, with the encouragement of the consular official, Cristobal secured approval to move to the United States in February of 1953, leaving his wife and four young children behind.

Cristóbal established legal residency and employment in Los Angeles, California. By September of the same year, he had saved enough to bring his family over. The young couple quickly found themselves serving in the Spanish speaking First Baptist Church of Los Angeles in whatever capacity they could. Later they served in another Spanish speaking church, Bethel, in East Los Angeles. During this time Cristóbal was working at the Bethlehem Steel Company.

Amid these experiences, Cristóbal increasingly sensed that God was calling him to serve in full time pastoral ministry. In 1959 Cristóbal was asked to fill in as the preacher at a small Baptist church in Wilmington, CA, in the harbor area of Los Angeles. He filled in for several Sundays until that church asked him to be their full-time pastor. His acceptance of that offer required him to leave his well-paying job at the steel company in exchange for the low-paying job at a small church.

He pastored in the harbor area of Los Angeles for several years until, in 1967, a small church plant in San José, CA, called him to be their pastor. He accepted and the family, by now numbering eleven children, piled into their 1958 VW van, and made their move to San José. That little church, Misión El Calvario, immediately doubled in size with the addition of thirteen from the Doña family!

By 1969 the church had outgrown its location and merged with another small Baptist church located on 21st Street, close to downtown San Jose. This church, 21st Street Baptist Church, also, soon outgrew its location and in 1976 merged with El Templo Bautista, a church on White Road. This new church merger was named White Road Baptist Church. Here Pastor Doña served as the senior pastor from 1976 until his retirement in 2003. What began as a small church of a couple dozen members eventually grew to become the largest Spanish speaking Southern Baptist church in California, with a membership of approximately 500 members with a weekly attendance of approximately 700. Even in his retirement, Pastor Doña continued in his calling of serving God's church by founding a small (but mighty) house church, Silicon Valley Baptist Church, and leading that for 16 years until his health no longer permitted it.

True to his original desire to prepare himself to be of use to the Lord's work, Pastor Doña pursued higher education. When he came to the United States, he had a rudimentary knowledge of English and an elementary level of formal schooling. But, shortly after arriving in America, he embarked on his education journey that included courses at Harbor College, Wilmington; California Baptist College (now University), Riverside; San Jose State College, (now University); and Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. He earned a B.A. degree from San Jose State in 1969 and a Master of Religious Education degree from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in 1972. These accomplishments were notable in that he was able to achieve them by the Grace of God while working and serving as a full-time Pastor and raising eleven children with Eugenia.

He had many interests that included learning how to use the latest tech gadgets, photography, studying and teaching God's word, and traveling, with memorable tours across Europe and Israel, and Mission Trips to Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama. Pastor Doña served a term as Vice President of the California Southern Baptist Convention. He also served two terms on the board of Trustees for Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary and was also proud to have served two terms as a trustee for the Casa Bautista de Publicaciones. Additionally, Pastor Doña was the writer of Spanish language materials for the Sunday School Board of the SBC. From 1972 until 1995 Pastor Doña broadcast a weekly radio program "Bellas Palabras de Vida" on station KNTA. Other radio stations picked up the program and repeated the signal, including shortwave stations throughout South America. Pastor Doña mentored many individuals who would go on to serve the Hispanic community as pastors, missionaries and leaders in their churches in California, Texas, Nevada and beyond - even to Latin America and Europe. He leaves a legacy of faithful service.

Pastor Doña's profound love for God, Christ's church and his family was evident to all. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eugenia Moreno Doña, and is survived by his eleven children, Cristobal, Jr., Mario, Clinton, Ada, Carlos, Marcia Ruth, Robert, David, Eugenia (Babs), Frank, and Luisa, along with their spouses, 36 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

His favorite Bible verse was Romans 8:32 "He who did not spare His own son but gave Him up for us all, how will he not also graciously give us all things?"

A memorial service will be held on September 21, 2024, at White Road Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Gideons International Ministry to donate Bibles in his memory. More information can be found at sendtheword.org.
