Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 29 to Mar. 31, 2023.
Cristine (Candela) Cronin, age 75, of New York, NY, sadly passed away on January 5, 2023. Cristine was born in Detroit on June 11, 1947. She graduated from St. David High School in Detroit, and continued her education at University of Detroit, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. She then furthered her studies in Political Science, attending the Rackham Graduate School at the University of Michigan.

Cristine made many friends during her professional career in Washington, DC, and New York. She worked as a consultant in Washington, and was very passionate about the Equal Rights Amendment. Serving as President of the Women's Equity Action League, Cris attended a meeting at the White House with President Jimmy Carter. In 1981, Cristine moved to New York, where she spent the next 30+ years. During her time in New York, she served as Executive Director of the Creative Coalition, a non-profit, non-partisan organization; was Executive Director of the Women's Campaign Fund, a national non-partisan organization dedicated to increasing the number of women in elected office; and then founded and was President of a non-profit, e-giving website.

Cristine was always very physically active and appreciated being able to run and rollerblade in Central Park. She also enjoyed the theater nightlife and hosting family and friends for visits to New York.

Cristine is survived by her siblings, Marcella Maher, Dianne (Kenneth) Miller, Anthony (Bernadette) Candela, Philip Candela, Joanne Rypkowski, Mary Candela, Victor (Peggy) Candela, Michael (Gayle) Candela, Stephen (Jennifer) Candela and Laura Dinezio, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was member of New York Athletic Club and used to stop by daily with her smiling face and lovely attitude to others and employees. I miss her inspirational short chats and May God bless her soul .

I just stumbled upon this and wish I would have heard sooner. We lost touch a few years back. Cristine gave me my first job out of college. Over the next 20 years, she grew to be a great friend and a mentor. I will miss being able to catch up and hear her wild NYC elite stories. Cristine was caring, passionate and relentless. She was blunt and always genuine. She dedicated her life to giving back and I know there are many people who are better off because they crossed paths with her. Will miss you Cristine.

Cristine, thank you for allowing me to stay in your home in NYC. So generous of you and it will be remembered always. I know what you meant to Laura and I´m so sorry the last 2-3 years were so difficult for you. I hope and pray you have found peace. Rest in Heaven Cris.

Laura, you message reminded me of a Thankgiving morning I spent in Cristine's apartment...or rather having some wine on the balcony while the balloons passed below us!

The children in my extended family were so imperssed that Uncle David was higher than the Macy's balloons.

Cristine was a good friend and for years a colleague in the nonprofit world we shared.

Miss her and our group of friends meeting for our regular drinks.

My sister Cristine was such a special person in my life! I looked up to and admired her since I was a child. I thought she was beautiful, funny, and the best big sister anyone could ever have. I loved when she came home and we would spend time in her room sitting and talking, singing and laughing. Once she moved away to New York, new adventures began. She would always be so excited to have family members go visit her in New York. She hosted my family many times and really took the time out of her busy schedule to make our visit one we would never forget! We watched the Thanksgiving Parade a few times from her balcony across from Central Park, and it was something we will never, ever forget! That is just one of the many memories she treated us to. My kids and I never would have seen New York in such a way if it hadn´t been for Cris. She truly loved when we visited her! I in turn loved having her come stay at my house when she would come to Michigan to visit. I have special memories of my sister from childhood until the day she passed. I miss her more than I can express and it´s hard to believe I will never see her smiling face again. I am thankful she is now at peace in a beautiful place, with our loved ones who have gone before us. Rest in peace my beautiful sister. Thanks for the memories. Love and miss you so much!! Your little sister, Laura
