Curtis Budny Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 30, 2025.

Curtis (Curt) John Budny, 83, of Lake Frederick, Virginia, passed away at his home Sunday, September 21, 2025, following a difficult battle with cancer.

Born to John Joseph and Anita Savage Budny in East Chicago, Indiana, Curt went on to serve in the US Army before launching into a 46 year career as a Navy contractor. Curt worked with the Aegis class ship program under companies such as Vitro Labs and BAE Systems.

His family and friends will forever remember and cherish his easy going nature, fun-loving spirit, generosity and abundant creativity. Friendly and outgoing, Curt would strike up conversations anywhere, and made friends everywhere. He was an accomplished draughtsman, calligrapher, carpenter, photographer and mechanic, artist, model-maker, carver and wood-burner. He played guitar and later the banjo, and sang in his church choir for several years.

A warm and loving father and husband, he was very proud of his family. He carried a great collection of jokes, always ready to share. A good traveler, he and Nancy enjoyed numerous road trips and cruises together, as well as treks to family gatherings that were often filled with boisterous card and board games running into the wee hours.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 49 years, Nancy Lamb Budny, and three of his children; Christopher Budny and Heather (Alex) Lysantri from his first marriage, and Kathleen (Steve) Budny Haslip, and his four grandchildren, John Doherty, Sophia Lysantri, Theo Haslip and Isla Haslip.

He was preceded in death by his son, Nathaniel Allen Budny and by his sister, Cathi Smyth.

A celebration of Curt's life will be held at 11:00 on October 25, 2025 at Opequon Presbyterian Church, 217 Opequon Church Lane preceded by visitation at 10:00.

Memorial donations may be made to Opequon Presbyterian Church or Blue Ridge Hospice at 333 Cork Street, Winchester, VA.
