Cynthia was a dear friend who always displayed remarkable generosity and hospitality which she combined with such bubbling vivacity. We were ourselves recipients of her (and John's) generosity and hospitality, as were numerous other foreigners, and waifs and down-and-outs. We will always remember her, and of course, John. What a wonderful and unusual partnership they had: he, tall, handsome, apparently unflappable, firmly grounded in Englishness and the English countryside; she, small, beautiful, effervescent and thoroughly Mediterranean. This world is poorer for their departure. We loved them both.

My Mum's last years were blighted by dementia. I'd like to thank all the friends and relations from Cambridge and further afield who stood by her and came to visit. "R.I.P. Mum" Charlie x
