Cynthia Harris Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 26 to Apr. 27, 2023.
Harris Cynthia "Cindy" Sue Harris (nee Dinkel), resident of Portland, Oregon, and Honolulu, Hawaii, passed away after fighting a long illness at the age of 65 on Sunday, April 23, 2023.

Cindy was born on May 10, 1957, in Portland, OR to Francis "Frank" Dinkel and Geraldine "Gerrie" Dinkel (nee Reavis).

Cindy started her nursing career at Pacific Lutheran University School of Nursing, Tacoma WA, and completed at Good Samaritan in 1979. She practiced nursing at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland for almost 20 years before moving to Honolulu in 1997. There she worked as a federal contractor and employee with TRIPLER Army Medical Center until her passing. Cindy also obtained a Master's in Healthcare Administration from the University of Phoenix.

In 1982, Cindy married Steve Harris and had a daughter, Lindsey, that year. After their amicable divorce, Cindy adopted Joshua. Steve and Cindy remained close and raised both children, an accomplishment she was most proud of.

Cindy loved traveling! She visited Germany and her brother Pat who served in the Army. She toured London with 2-year-old Lindsey, as well as a trip to Italy with Lindsey as an adult. She was a closet history buff on everything from Colonial Virginia to the Civil War and passionately visited the East Coast's historical sites such as Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg, Richmond VA Capital of Confederacy, and Monticello Thomas Jefferson home, battlefields in Gettysburg, PA, and Manassas, VA.

Cindy had a passion for decorating, which she said was therapeutic. She had photos of her family as well as decor from her utmost passion- anything Mickey Mouse and Disney- from jewelry, pajamas, bed sheets to window dressings and other memorabilia. She was an avid fan of Freddie Mercury and Queen music and would float into their world when listening. Cindy was known for her love of children and she had a way of endearing them. It seemed all children knew she was a kid at heart with her smile, small gifts, and loving humor. She lived for her grandkids Levi and Nava. She was in ecstasy to hear them call her "Grammy" on Facetime as they traveled the world or in person on their days together in Hawaii.

Cindy was preceded in death by her father, Frank Dinkel, and her mother, Gerrie Dinkel (nee Reavis) and brother Pat Dinkel, stepfather Duane "Mac" McDonald, and stepbrother Patrick McDonald. She is survived by her sister Heidi Jimenez (nee Dinkel) and brother Mike Dinkel, and children Joshua now Aubrey and Lindsey (nee Harris) Helms, son-in-law Jake Helms, grandchildren Levi and Nava, beloved niece and nephew Kiana Jimenez Druckrey and Marteen Jimenez, and several loving cousins.

**The family is planning a celebration of life at Cindy's favorite place to throw a party, Round Table Pizza in Beaverton, Oregon on Friday, April 28th from 5-8 pm.

Cindy always cared about the kids. All of them. I'm so grateful for her spirit of Ohana/family. We played in our twenties and when we separated she made share we loved the kids. We loved to visit and go to the Halekulani and House Without A Key for grate memories and laughs. Whenever I'm in Honolulu I will stop in to embrace the spirit of my parents and now Cindy too.

Cindy and I had so much fun retelling stories from a road trip in July 2013, transporting Watson, Lindsey´s English bulldog (although Watson never thought he was a dog), from Washington DC to Portland Oregon.

Cindy was a kid at heart. She taught both of my boys how to burp, how to arm fart and how to love ketchup ! All the foster children that came and went loved Cindy. All of our own children adored her. She will be greatly missed by all....with her smile still fresh in our minds and hearts. RIP dear friend. Elyse, Matt & Nick

Aunt Cindy was very special to M5 (Michelle, Gar´s niece, husband Morgan aka "Morgan from Oregon" Duck, Malakai, Max, Miriam) who lived in Hawaii and now visit the islands annually. Pictured is a party for Aunt Cindy on her birthday, 10 May 2019. She wore the Cinderella tiara and had most fun splashing in the pool. We all miss and will remember your kindness and fun spirit always.

Dearest Auntie Cindy,
You are indeed an auntie to all of us. Always ready with a smiling face, a joke, or party (with the best decorations) for the kids! So many good memories and hangouts on the island with you-on our lanai, at the beach. Our kids adored you ever since they were babies! Hugs to you and your family. Until we meet again, with love, M5

Deepest sympathy to Cindy´s family for the sudden loss of a wonderful, kindhearted, loving person. I will always remember her as a hard working coworker at TRICARE and the fun times with the whole gang. Thank you Cindy for being you!
God bless you and rest in peace!

To our beautiful Cindy Sue. I am so happy to have known you. God rest your soul. Sharing a memory. This picture is over 20 years old. You loved going to the beach, so every month, we had "Fun in the Sun Day" at Ko'Olina Lagoons. Kalanianaole. You couldn't say it. So I took three float noodle thingees, one named Kalani. The other name Ani. The third one was named Ole. Soon after you could say the word, Kalanianaole Highway. Love you, Hawaiian girl!
