Cynthia "Cyndi" Boehm McLaughlin, 67, of South Charleston, West Virginia, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, in Houston, Texas, from a brain aneurysm. She had just completed treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia at MD Anderson Cancer Center and was preparing to return home.
Cyndi was born January 25, 1958, in South Charleston, West Virginia, to Greta and the late Ezra Boehm. She grew up in Hurricane, West Virginia, where she developed the warmth, energy, and genuine love for people that would define her entire life.
A lifelong educator, Cyndi found her greatest joy working at Marietta City Schools in Marietta, Ohio, where she taught life skills to students with developmental disabilities - teaching them to navigate the world with confidence. She served students across multiple schools throughout her career before retiring in June 2020. Cyndi earned her bachelor's degree from Alderson Broaddus University and her Master of Divinity from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Cyndi could light up any room she entered. She had an infectious energy and became everyone's best friend almost instantly. She was someone who never did anything halfway - whether tending her beloved garden for hours until exhaustion, hunting for treasures while antiquing, or doting endlessly on her two dogs, Taz and Wiley. She was a breast cancer survivor and faced her recent battle with AML with remarkable courage and grace.
Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. For many years, Cyndi was active in churches within the American Baptist Convention, and for her final years, she was a devoted member of Oakwood Baptist Church in Charleston, where she found deep fellowship and joy singing in the choir. She loved God, loved people, and loved lifting her voice in worship.
Cyndi married Jeff McLaughlin on February 17, 2022, and often told friends and family that these past few years had been the happiest of her life. Their love for each other was evident to everyone who knew them, and they faced her illness together with unwavering devotion.
Cyndi is survived by her husband, Jeff McLaughlin of South Charleston, WV; her mother, Greta Boehm of Scott Depot, WV; her brothers, Randy Boehm of Virginia Beach, VA, and Doug Boehm and his wife Kellie of Hurricane, WV; her son, Justin Porter and his wife LeAnn; her stepsons, Jacob McLaughlin and Sam McLaughlin; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Cyndi's life will be held at Oakwood Baptist Church, 855 Oakwood Road, Charleston, West Virginia 25314, on Tuesday, December 2nd. Visitation will begin at 5:30pm, the service at 6:30pm, followed by a celebration of life with dinner and mint chocolate chip ice cream, Cyndi's favorite, at 7:30pm.
