Dale Higbee Obituary

Dale Strohe Higbee, of Salisbury, died Dec. 29, 2015. He was born in Proctor, Vt., June 14, 1925, to Paul and Catherine Higbee. He is survived by one child, Catherine H. Mize and her husband, David of Statesville; and several nieces and nephews in New England. Dr. Higbee received an AB from Harvard and earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Texas. He pursued his career for 34 years with 33 years of service at the VA Hospital in Salisbury. Dr. Higbee served in the Army in France during World War II in the 314th regiment, 79th division. He earned the Combat Infantry badge and the Purple Heart. Dr. Higbee's great passion was for music. He was a free-lance flutist and recorder player for many years and was the founder and music director of Carolina Baroque from 1988-2011. Visitation: 5-6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2 at Haven Lutheran Church, 207 W. Harrison St., Salisbury, NC 28144. Lyerly Funeral Home is serving the Higbee family. I knew Dale through purchasing his best recorders, Fred Morgan originals, four years ago. We had an ongoing correspondence (I was doing a post-grad degree in psychology, so I appreciated his experience in this field), and I sent him a birthday greeting every subsequent year (June 14th). I am sorry to hear of his passing, but I remember him often, and his legacy lives every time I play his marvelous recorders.

Dear Higbee family, I have seen Dale recently at the Veterans Home. We recognized each other immediately and I spent some time with him. It was good to see him as I hadn't sent him often since I left St. John's where we spent time together regarding Carolina Baroque.My prayers are with you and your family during this time of loss.
