DAN CHRISTOPHER HOWLEY

I met Mr. Howley when I was a teenage boy working the gas docks at Romp's Waterport. He had just purchased a new powerboat, a Blackfin. Bluefin? In any case, this was a beautiful and expensive center-console fishing machine.

We had the boat at the marina for prep or test runs or maybe because we took delivery. Don't remember. But when Mr. Howley looked at that boat, he was like a little boy with a new toy. Pure joy!

Interestingly, he had the outboard motor's labels stripped and the outboard repainted to match the boat. I asked why, to which he replied, "they're not paying me to advertise their product."

I thought that was such a different attitude to take, that we don't have to take everything as given ... that we have a choice.

I've never forgotten that, and the reason I found Mr. Howley's obituary is because I am presently online researching how to get an outboard motor repainted.

I salute the memory of a man I hardly knew, but who changed my life in an important little way.

Jan just read about Dan's passing in the Georgetown Magazine. I lived with Dan several years and we had many classes together at GU. My prayers will be with you during the next phase of your life. The beginning will be difficult but I can assure you it improves as time passes. It has been 18 months since my wife passed after 48 years together. I am just know beginning to see daylight and begin to experience life again. I remember you from the Hilltop days when you were dating Dan. God Bless you and your family.

Dan was such a gentle soul and always there to lend a hand. I admired and respected him in business but more importantly as a person, I will miss him. I will keep your family in my prayers.

I haven't seen Dan since a Gilmour reunion, which one I cannot remember, but it has been a while, actually far too long. Time obviously goes by quicker than we can cope with its passing!

He was always ready with a quick smile that is easy to see even now.

I am sorry that his time ran out. It was definitely my loss.

I was one of many, as a new Floridian away from my family in the early 90's, who was fortunate to be taken in by the Howleys and treated like family. Jan, words can't express how much the kindness of your family meant to me and I will forever cherish memories of many Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, the Dan Howley shirt give aways (with Sara modeling) the countless gatherings, cook outs and fishing trips, weddings and happy hours along side Dan at Waxy's. He was the first person I called whenever I returned to Fort Lauderdale and I always looked forward to seeing him in his corner at Waxy's. I often stopped by his office and pulled up a chair to chat. Dan took me on my first trip to the Bahamas aboard Decoy and Deb and I married on Harbour Island because of you and Dan. All my closest friends in Fort Lauderdale are linked to you and Dan in some way. The impact on our lives for having known him and you is simply immeasurable. I can never thank you enough or show proper gratitude. I love you and God bless you, Jan and the Howley family.

Bill and I have so many fun memories of Dan. The Up The River Trip in the Whalers……SO many Bridge Club Parties. Dan has one of the first people I meant when I moved to Vermilion in 1957……Many fun beach parties, crewed for him on his Rebel…..went to dances at Gilmore,( HIs Mom took the Lagoons Girls) He sure will be missed , but he lead a great life. Dear Howley Family,
It has been some time now since we have seen you, but we have such fond memories of all the good times we shared with you at Put-in-Bay. Dan always sparkled when he was in his boat, a true passion for him and Dad remarked that Dan was a fine hunter. He was such a personable man and he will be missed terribly by all the people he has touched. We will be praying that you all find peace during this most difficult time in life.
