Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 5, 2010.
Daniel Luck Blalock KINGSPORT, Tenn. Daniel Luck Blalock, 93, Kingsport went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, at Remington House, following a brief illness. Luck was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, and a long-time member of Adams Chapel United Methodist Church, being a lay speaker, teaching Sunday school classes and serving in many other capacities. He also served as Buffalo Mountain Camp trustee. He was the oldest living member of Adams Chapel at the time of his death. After Luck graduated from King College with a B.A. in chemistry and secondary education, his first job was teaching at the old Dixon School where he taught Tennessee history, and health science. His work-history also included working at Holston Defense during the war prior to being hired at the Tennessee Eastman Co. in 1945 in the Organic Chemical Division until his retirement in 1976. He was also an avid farmer, operating a dairy and/or beef farm for most of his life. Mr. Blalock was past Master and long time chaplain of the Masonic Whiteside Lodge No. 13, Scottish Rite; charter member of the Shriner Jericho Temple, and Past Patron of the Eastern Star and held many positions in the Grand Chapter of the State of Tennessee. He also served on the Sullivan County Tax Equalization Board for 23 years, serving as chairman many of those years. He served as a director of Farm Bureau for 58 years, and also served a term as president and many years as treasurer and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Farm Bureau member for the 5th District of the State of Tennessee. With all Luck's achievements and volunteer work, he and Grace still had time to visit all 50 states after he retired from the Tennessee Eastman Company. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother and will be missed by all who knew him. He was blessed with good health, good friends, a wonderful sense of humor, and willingness to help others. Luck was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Grace Cross Blalock; his middle son, Larry Blalock; his parents, Daniel Jackson and Lola Mae Blalock; sisters, Sarah Bowery, Ruth Isley, and Lorena McNutt. Survivors include his sons and a daughters-in-law, Dan and Twalla Blalock of Kingsport, Jim and Judy Blalock of Kingsport, and Marian Blalock of Blountville; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Bonnie Lamie of Saltville, Va., Emma Melton and Trula Lindamood of Blountville. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Masonic rites will be given by Whiteside Lodge No. 13 of Blountville. Burial will immediately follow the service at Gunnings Cemetery in Blountville. Pallbearers will be the grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Honorary pallbearers will be the grandchildren of Jack and Lola and Alfred and Pearl Cross.
