I first met Dan in the mid - 80's shortly after he & Charlotte met "on top of the ski slope ". He was slightly overwhelmed by all of our questions, but soon learned we merely wanted to get to know this gentleman Charlotte kept talking about. I loved talking Stanford, Alabama and 49'er football with him. And he is certainly the only person who called my dalmatian "Stripe" instead of "Spot".

Dr. Barnhouse (one of the greatest of theologians) was driving his two young children to the funeral services of his recently deceased wife. Fretting over one of the Scriptures he was going to give (23 Psalm) at his wife's services, he feared his children would not understand. Almost immediately, a large semi truck and trailor passed them on their left. The sun was rising on their left and the passing truck cast a large shadow into Dr. Barnhouse's car. Understanding this message from the Lord, he asked the children, "Would you rather have been struck by that large truck, or the shadow of the truck? The children replied, "Oh daddy, we'd rather be struck by the shadow of the truck." Dr, Barnhouse then said, "Children, your mommie didn't stay in the 'Valley of the Shadow of death, she passed through it just like the shadow of the truck that passed us." Dear friends and family, Dan is not in the Valley of the shadow of death, he passed right on through it, because he was a child (believer) of our Lord Jesus Christ.

When my husband and I first met Dan about 15 years ago, we thought he had a quirky sense of humor. Between the puns that seemed to punctuate the end of every sentence and the love we shared for understanding the orthopedic and neurologic conditions of the human body, Dan was a wonderful person to sit next to at a dinner parry. He had a wonderful way of interacting with the "Catering Gals", whom he met through his lovely wife Charlotte. There will always be a place set for him at our dinner table, and we will toast to you Dear Dan. We'll take good care of Charlotte! Love, Michael and Dora

Dan was my not only my Brother-in-Law but I also considered him a good friend and advisor. He had a darling sense of humor which helped me and others through some tough times. He was loving and caring and always wanted to share his knowledge about medical break-throughs and foods and vitiamins that would make a person healthy. He was great to our family and absolutely adored my Sister Charlotte. Charlotte's family will truly miss this kind soul and friend.

We extend our condolences to Charlotte and Dan's family. Dan was a dear, dear soul, and we are so sorry that the brave battle waged by both Dan and Charlotte had a sad ending. We will always cherish the memories of the happy times we spent with the Carlsons.

Dan's sparkling smile, his wonderful sense of humor, and his dedicated love for his family will always stand out in my memory of him. I always enjoyed Dan and Charlotte's visits to Virginia. He fought a valiant fight, but now is home with the Lord. Cherish the memories to give you comfort.
