Our daughter Kimmy graduated with Danny. She always spoke highly of him as to his success in the classroom as well as his charity work and his dedication to fitness. You have to be so proud of his being such an upstanding young man. To the entire Cavaretta family, we are so very sad and sorry for your loss.

Dear Michael, Mary Jo, & family,
We are thinking of you all at this difficult time and our hearts are filled with sadness with your loss of Daniel. We will always remember his kind smile and how he cared about others. When Daniel came to our home he was always the first to ask if he could do anything to help. It did not matter if it was a small gathering or a big party, he wanted to help. He was always the one who did not leave until everything was cleaned and put away. He was the type of kid every parent wished their kids had as a friend because he truly was a genuine caring and thoughtful person. Our daughter was blessed to call him her friend.
Our Deepest Sympathy,
The Tabacco Family

During my freshman year at Elon, Dan pushed me to enter into my first bodybuilding competition. It was the greatest experience of my life, and I am forever grateful that he was able to coach me, and for his knowledge and enthusiasm that guided me through prep. Calling him merely a coach, though, does not emphasize the gravity that he had on my life. He was a mentor, a dear friend, and my greatest fitness inspiration. Because of Dan, I train, improve, and look at life in a different and more wholistic light. His passion for teaching and spreading knowledge was evident in every meeting that we had, and I cannot thank God enough for the time we spent together. He made me realize that focusing on what others have is irrelevant, but trying your best with the cards that you are dealt is what matters in life. I will never be able to repay Dan for how much better my life is because of him. I will forever look up to him, and will miss him always and forever. I love you Dan. Thank you.

Like so many others, our family was devastated to hear about the loss of Danny. We all remember Danny walking your dog Scout throughout the neighborhood and being such a positive and upbeat person who always shared a comforting smile during any conversation. Our neighborhood has lost another special person far too early. All of our thoughts and prayers are for the entire Cavaretta family as you cope in this tragic moment of your lives. We had the privilege of working with Daniel at Elon through the National and International Fellowships Office as he applied for nationally competitive awards. He was a stellar student who was inquisitive and passionate about his studies and his research. He wasn't interested in pursuing big goals for the accolades or prizes that went along with them, but rather, for the intellectual challenge and potential growth he could gain by doing so. When we think of Daniel, we'll remember him for that integrity, but also for his kindheartedness.
We wish you peace and comfort as you grieve this enormous loss and celebrate Daniel's life. He will be missed by many at Elon.

I only had the pleasure of knowing Daniel for a few short months but we would chat in the hallways and he always had a smile on his face. I am so saddened by his loss and hope that happy memories comfort you during this difficult time!

It is rare to meet anyone as earnest and authentic as Daniel. As a fellow Lumen scholar, he would always ask about my research when he saw me at the Campus Rec desk, in the Millpoint neighborhood, or in the Honors office. I never had a superficial conversation with him; he was one of the few people who would ask about my day and actually care about the answer. One time, I even ran into Daniel when my parents were visiting, and he and my dad began a conversation that lasted for at least 10 minutes. That was classic Daniel--he loved engaging in discussions with other people.
Although the Lumen Prize is, by necessity of our research, a relatively independent program, my experience as a Lumen scholar would not have been the same if Daniel had not been in my cohort. I hope that future Lumen scholars will take the time to engage with their peers in the same way that Daniel did. He will be forever missed.

So saddened to hear about this. I didn't know Daniel too well, but he was my KIN 164 instructor the first half of this semester and was always a friendly face in the Kinesiology department. He was always extremely positive and helpful. Daniel will forever be missed!

Dan was an incredible student and an even better person. Humble in his knowledge, always eager to learn more and to help his classmates, he made connections that were deep and thoughtful. I especially loved that we chatted every time I saw him around campus or at the Harris Teeter. I wish Dan's family, friends, and all whose lives he touched comfort during this sad time.

Dear Michael,Mary Jo, Michael, and Christian
Words cannot express how deeply saddened we are at the news of Danny's passing. We can only hope that sharing in your grief in some small way may help to ease it. Danny clearly had very positive impact on many. Although it has been some time since I have seen Danny, I do remember his welcoming smile and kind eyes so evident in the beautiful portrait you shared.
Keeping you in our thoughts and holding you in our hearts,
Karen, Dennis, Jenna, and TJ Careri

As the director of the Lumen Prize program at Elon University, I had the great good fortune of becoming familiar with Daniel as a student and a scholar. He demonstrated remarkable insight for such a young researcher, and his work ethic was an inspiration to everyone who knew him. Plus, he was always so kind in explaining to me, a philosopher, the details of his own research in exercise science. The world is smaller for his absence, and I know I speak for the whole Elon community when I express my deepest condolences to his family.

You were one of the few peers that will engage in honest conversation after a: " Hello! How are you?"; you never replied with a quick, shallow: "fine". In my head, I was asking many questions, looking for answers that no one will give me. In my deepest, silent quest for answers, you answered! Angels are among us and you are one of them.

Dan was an amazing guy. He blew all of us away when he came to ELON with his knowledge about fitness, and experience as a competitive body builder. Everyone, and I mean everyone, really enjoyed his company and being able to hang out with him. On behalf of ELON, we're all sorry for your loss.
