from a treasured photograph: I hadn´t soloed yet (no wings on the hat) so this was taken in Late June or 1st week of July 1969. Fort Wolters "Primary Helicopter Center" 10th WOC 69-49 B-1. If you weren´t on the "hill" you were in barracks like these future Rotary Wing Army Aviators are enjoying spending a hot Sunday afternoon doing nothing (rare). Khakis are the uniform of the day and so you didn´t have to break starch for dinner you got out of the shirt and maybe the pants too, hung them on the end of the bunk and sat around in army issue T-shirts and dog tags. Dan Faggard has got the grey steel chair reversed smoking his usual tiparillo with a newspaper from home on one side I´ve got my army issue blue tackle box open....maybe I was going to polish my brass (then again, maybe not) We could smoke and that´s an army issue ashtray. Joe Thomas, one of the few guys from Texas, is greeting the photographer in his usual inimitable way. Top bunk is tight as a drum. We used to play the card game "Hearts" a lot. Dan was a fanatic about it. His best effort stuck you with the queen of Spades every time. The window is up as far as it can go. Old barracks roof joists are visible. There´s no A/C ...only what the screen lets in. We are soon to be pilots! The future awaits!
