Born in Tampa, Florida July 3, 1935, Dan was the son of the late Frank Fleitas and Juana Fleitas; he is survived by his wife Jo Fleitas; brother Frank Joseph Fleitas and wife Martha of San Antonio, Texas; and sister-in-law Joan Fleitas of Fairfield, Connecticut.

During his years at UNC Charlotte over 20,000 students had enrolled in the classes he taught until he retired in 2005. It is with great sadness that I attach the obituary for my dear friend Dan Fleitas. I was with Dan the last few days of his life. and was with Jo when he passed. Just a few days before his death, he was talking with members of the Piedmont Kennel Club about leasing the building, asking about all our friends and how they were doing, and working crossword puzzles. Dan was one of the most honest, humble individuals I have ever met. Bob and I enjoyed a lot of activities with Jo and Dan over the last several years. We spent many Thanksgivings at Myrtle Beach. One of Dan´s favorite things to do was to attend the Carolina Opry Christmas Show. He was so patient with us when Jo and I would spend hours shopping or hitting the stores at midnight on Black Friday! He loves his dogs, especially Andy, the Pomeranian, we gave to Jo and Dan because I could not keep him groomed! Every time we were at their home and Dan came home from work; he would go straight to Andy. I´m attaching a picture of our 2011 trip to Myrtle Beach Run to the Sun car show. We were riding in the car show parade - Dan was in the front seat with Bob and Jo is in the back with me.
We have so many wonderful memories. We will truly miss Dan.
