Daniel Keith Havey

HARRISONBURG, VA. - Beloved son, brother, and father, Daniel Keith Havey, 34, passed away Jan. 20, 2013 in Harrisonburg, Va. He was born Dec. 12, 1978, in Portsmouth, N.H., to Mark and Keitha Havey.

Daniel Keith grew up in Kittery and Virginia Beach, Va. He graduated from Tallwood High School in Virginia Beach, Va. After high school, he attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., where he received his B.S. Degree in Chemistry. He then attended graduate school at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo., where he earned a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry. Daniel did post-doctoral work at the University of Maryland. He then won a prestigious National Research Council Fellowship and did research at the National Institutes of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Md. Daniel joined the faculty at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., where he was fulfilling a life-long dream to be a college professor. His passion was to teach and mentor young people and to provide them with opportunities for understanding chemistry, scientific research, and the joys of learning. Daniel was a wonderfully inspirational mentor who brought out the very best in his students, and was deeply loved, admired and respected by them.

Daniel Keith will be immeasurably missed by his beloved children, Holly Allison Havey and Kerrigan Rose Havey, who reside in Austin, Texas with their mother, Crystal Diane Havey. Daniel is survived by his loving parents, Mark and Keitha Havey of Virginia Beach, Va.; his sister, Rebecca Haverkos and her husband, Daniel Haverkos, of Silver Spring, Md.; and his nephew, Matthew Haverkos. He will be deeply missed by his maternal grandmother, Bessie D. Schoppee of Jonesboro; aunts and uncles, Terry and Dana Hilt, Susan and Robert Carter, Michael and Wendy Schoppee, Kristi and Jeff Anderson, Dwight and Jane Havey, Keith and Michele Havey, Jonathan and Cindy Havey, Melody Havey; and many cousins. Daniel was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Keith A. and Joan G. Havey; his maternal grandfather, Keith H. Schoppee; and his uncle, Dana Schoppee.

A memorial service was held Monday, Jan. 28, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 220 Court St., Machias. Interment services was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Jonesboro. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to a college trust established for Daniel's two children.
