Dan was one of my first scientific mentors. I was still an undergraduate at Hampshire College in 1975 when I joined the Shriners Burns Inst. at MGH in Boston. I worked with June Aprille and Dan on catecholamine research. They made the research and working climate SO much fun and an incredible learning experience. These experiences over a year and a half sustained my love for research during the rest of my graduate and postdoctoral years with less than encouraging mentors. I very definitely have them to thank for giving me the tools that sustained my career over the next 35+ years.

Brilliance aside, Dan was such a special and lovely man - - kind, generous, sensitive, hard working, incredibly funny, and a great mentor and friend. For over 50 years, he was involved in many key events in our lives, too many to recount. Of course he will be sorely missed - - we have been missing him for some time already.
