I will never forget Dan, who was my store manager, come back to the warehouse....he took his suit jacket off...and helped me carry flattened cardboard out to the dumpster. Just me and him. He had no reason to do it, except that he was just that awesome a man. I have told this story so many times over the years. Dan showed me what a true leader does. I will never forget his example. I am so sorry to find he had passed. I was searching on Facebook to share this story with him and to thank him. Grace to you, his family.

Hi Denise, I was shocked to hear about the loss of your husband. I stopped in my late wife's (Diane Bianco) Dicks Sporting Goods store in Washington,Pa recently and they informed me about Dan. I am so sorry for your and the boys loss. Dan was always so thoughtful, caring, and special to my wife during her time with the company. I am sure they are sharing a special moment in heaven. Denise, Daniel, Michael and Patrick:

I can only echo what so many others have posted and commented this past week about your husband, your father and our friend. What struck me the most about Dan was just how genuine and humble a man he was. While he achieved so much in life, he chose to return to Hancock. While Hancock is no thriving metropolis, it has one thing no one else can claim; it is home to a great man – Dan McCann.

Aunt Liz & Uncle Donald

December 4, 2013

My heart is missing a huge piece as that is how much room Dan took in my heart. He was truly a good man, a wonderful husband a great father and to me and our family a nephew that was always there for us. n My thoughts and prayers are with Denise and the boys.
Dan is watching over them with his mother and Old Granny too.

From the time I was privileged to have Dan in 8th grade social studies and watched him help Coach John Zawatsky win a Section Four Baseball Title, he was nothing but class, class, class!! He will truly be missed along with his optimistic smile and view on life. Danny McCann was one of the greatest "winners" I have ever had the privilege of knowing! May he rest in peace and my sincere Condolences to his entire family and his Hancock Baseball Team Family!

December 2, 2013

Denise and sons, it was a pleasure to have known your husband/father. Although it has been many years since I worked with him at the old Vestal store and played softball with him, the memories are still very fresh.
He was behind almost every joke, prank etc. and you always had to laugh, even when the joke was on you, because you would look over and there he would be with that big grin on his face proclaiming his innocence.

He will be missed.

December 2, 2013

Denise, Daniel, Michael and Patrick,

We are dearly sorry for your loss.

Dan will be truly missed but forever in our hearts!

Dan was the constant motivator and optimist of our group. He was our
coach and friend.

Who will forget him wearing suits to the intramural basketball playoffs to
show how serious he was about winning and to out class the other teams.

This enthusiasm carried over to the softball field, where I have some of my
fondest memories.

His constant humor made others want to be around him, he did not have a mean side.

He was always willing to help us out, he would lend you his car if you needed it for anything.

I remember him allowing a fellow student to stay in his dorm room when that student was not getting along with his room mate.

All of these traits were evident in his success in business and in his family life.

It would take days to relay all of the funny and fond memories I have of my time with him.

As we all just got together recently, it is hard to imagine the world without him.

Much Love,
Chris and Dee McGourty

I was crushed when I heard of Dan's passing. My heart breaks for his family, and for all who knew him. I'm having a difficult time coming to terms with the fact that I will never again walk into his office and be greeted by his 1000 watt smile - you know it was genuine because his eyes smiled, too - and a warm greeting and hug. I'll miss meeting him at Duff's for wings when in Buffalo, and talking about hockey (Go Sabres!). My prayers go out to his family. We are all better for having known Dan, and I feel fortunate that he was a part of my experience at DSG.

Although I am having a hard time wrapping my head around this tragedy I am so grateful we were able to meet you Denise and see Dan at Nick's wedding. Danny and I had many fond memories when he would come to Chicago with his grandma. Your boys look so much like how I remember him as a young boy. I wish I had words to take your pain away. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the boy during this difficult time. I hope to continue to get to know you, even if it is just through facebook. Please keep us posted on how you are doing and how the boys are doing. I hope to one day meet the boys, they had an awesome father and you an awesome husband. Take care of yourself Denise.

We'll never forget you Dan

December 1, 2013

I met Dan when we were both freshmen roommates at Niagara University in the fall of 1982. The school did a fine job of matching us based on the main criteria of similar interests and it was certainly HUGE to have a Red Sox fan to room with -way out in western New York. But what really made the match work was they paired a humble, likeable, friendly, outgoing person with an uptight kid from Connecticut. Dan was able to look past all of the things that made me difficult to deal with and stayed the course with me to include me in his inner circle.
Dan was the leader of a rag tag bunch of geographic misfits all of which were genuinely included by him in all the things we had come to define ourselves by – athletics. He pulled us onto the softball field and cajoled us onto the basketball court. To Dan, no one was excluded –no matter how little talent he may have had. Dan was our leader. Whether it was ordering wings at 2am or getting us out for our first softball practice with 3 inches or more of snow still on the ground.
Dan single handedly served as the recruiting wing of Niagara University in the Binghampton area. Incredibly three other friends from Hancock attended Niagara University – because Dan was there. To me he was their safety net – their trusted pied piper, their leader.
When Dan suffered a horrible car accident that caused him to be hospitalized for a month, Dan was never bitter or even angry. I'll never forget what he said to me shortly after being released from the hospital when he had finally met up with, and had a conversation with, the fellow student who had caused his hospital stay. Upon finishing his conversation, Dan strolled over to me, beaming with that wide smile of his that greeted all who met him, and said with genuine pride “____ said I was the nicest guy (he/she) ever met”. That is what mattered most to Dan, that others thought well of him. How could we not? There was not a thing about Dan anyone would ever have an ill word to say. What a legacy!
Dan and I shared opening day at Fenway Park with his Uncle Sonny and Uncle Donald from 1983-1985. I take comfort in knowing the last thing in baseball Dan was able to see was his Red Sox as the champions of baseball – for him their win is eternal.
God blessed you Denise, Daniel, Michael and Patrick. Please know your husband and your father was an inspiration and a true blessing to all who had the pleasure to know him.

While growing up in Hancock, everyone used to gather at Dan's house to play basketball. Being a few years younger, some of the older guys had a tendency not to let the younger guys play, but Dan kept them in check and always made sure the younger guys got some playing time too. That was just one of example, of many, why Dan was such a great guy to so many people. I will never forget you Dapper!
