Daniel McClure Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 7, 2023.
It is with great sadness and love that the McClure family shares of Dan McClure's peaceful passing on April 11, 2023. He was 53. To know Dan was to feel his love – for Jesus, for you, for others, and for life itself. And while we can hardly imagine a world without him, we are immensely grateful for the gifts he gave during his very purposeful life.Born March 16, 1970, in Redwood City, CA, Dan graduated from Woodside High School and went on to San Jose State where he earned a Masters in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Gerontology. Over his career, Dan held leadership positions as professor, pastor, and non-profit executive and while the roles were varied and diverse, they followed a consistent theme: helping people feel valued, included, and inspired to become their best selves! As a faculty member at his alma mater, San Jose State University, Dan spent over 25 years teaching courses in Fitness and Nutrition, Health in Later Life, Team Building, Children's Health and Fitness, Stress Management, Creating a Meaningful Life, and Development of Human Potential. He challenged his students to step out of their comfort zones to change the world – something he often led by example and modeled himself.Driven by a deep conviction that everyone should have access to health and wellness regardless of their socio-economic status or age, Dan founded the non-profit Generations Community Wellness Centers. Through partnerships with hospitals, local and state government agencies, schools, senior centers and other non-profits, Generations brought innovative programs to under-served communities throughout the San Francisco Bay Area region. During its 10 years, hundreds of thousands of low-income people from newborns to the extremely elderly benefited from Generations' life-changing health and wellness programs. Its legacy of positive impact remains to this day. While Dan became a nationally known expert in the field of health and fitness, the professional role that was probably the most near and dear to his heart was that of Pastor – first at Trinity Church in Sunnyvale and then as lead pastor for Palo Alto First Christian Church. Dan's passionate sermons, heartfelt prayers and love for Jesus inspired people throughout the Bay Area, the country and beyond—and continue to do so today through videos of his messages. In recent years, Dan continued to teach and inspire through his own health challenges. In 2021, he wrote a book called "Hidden Treasures: A Pastor's Journey Navigating Stage IV Cancer" in which he shared his deeply personal and moving story of living purposefully through a terminal cancer diagnosis. Known equally well for providing wise counsel and "bringing the party", Dan was a rare combination of incredible depth and exuberant fun. His larger-than-life personality, encouraging spirit and the generosity with which he lived his life will be incredibly missed.Dan is survived by his beloved and loving wife Annette, daughter Sierra, son Cayden, parents David and Patricia McClure and siblings Trudy (Ryan) Wentworth, Tracy (Neil) Smith, David McClure and James (Shannon) McClure, his wonderful in-laws and many nieces and nephews.A Celebration of Life Service is planned for: Saturday May 13th at 3PM, Peninsula Bible Church 3505 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto, CA 94306In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The King's Academy (Sierra and Cayden's school) for the support of their wonderful staff who have provided tremendous care to the McClure family. The King's Academy, 562 N. Britton Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94085. (In memory of Dan McClure) http://weblink.donorperfect.com/InMemoryOfDanMcClure

Professor Dan brought passion, enthusiasm, optimism, and tenacity to every class that I had the privilege of attending during my time as a San Jose State public health student. Classes always began with a smile as he "brought the party" and offered inspiring words simply about living an impactful life as future public health leaders.

I vividly remember when he shared about his battle with cancer on the first day of class. Uncontrollable tears rolled down my cheeks, not out of sympathy, but rather out of great sadness that someone so awesome has to leave this earth so soon.

He is someone we should all take as an inspiration. He always stayed in touch with me through social media comments and offered words of encouragement. I was moved by his book titled "Hidden Treasures: A Pastor's Journey Navigating Stage IV Cancer" and would urge many to read it as well.

May his legacy live on and may we all be like Dan and "bring the party" to every room we walk into.
