DANIEL R. MOORE

I worked across the street from Danny for ten years. One of the best times I had was the time that Danny took me to a Red Sox game. I had so much fun with him. I too will miss Danny's shy, boyish smile.

Danny was exceptionally kind and generous. I once called him for help when my car broke down, not realizing that he was working in Lawrence instead of Somerville. He drove 90 minutes to where I was at, another hour to take me where I needed to go and then 90 more minutes back to his business, and never once made me feel bad about it.

I worked at McIntyre & Moore when it was in Davis Square in the early 2000's. Danny was a pleasure to work for; he was smart and patient and so unassumingly funny. I loved him like an uncle. I loved occasionally having a drink with him in a neighborhood bar, loved his bookstore and will always remember the way his shy smile spread across his face.

Fondly remembered. A kind and gentle soul with a passion for baseball. A regular at the Woodlawn Tap, a fierce card player, namesake for Will and Emilie's son, a true and loyal friend to Mike. Always remembered.

I was very saddened by the news of Danny's passing, and my condolences go out to his family and to the bookselling community, of which he was such a vital part. In my years working for Danny and Mike in Harvard Square I learned so much about the book world, and book history, and from Danny in particular I gleaned a small part of his expertise in bookbinding, for which I'm particularly grateful. I'll miss Danny's mischievous sense of humor and his passion for the Pirates. I'm glad I got to catch up with him and Mike before the Porter Square store closed.

I am shocked that Dan has died. He was a truly generous, kind, connected person. My condolences to his family.

Dann was one of my favorite people in the book business, and always one of the nicest kindest people you could ever meet, this is a loss to all of us.

Dan was a great guy. I met him in 1987 when I first started going to Cambridge to sell books for Texas Bookman. Later at Cirobe we had a dinner we called "Girl's night out with Dan Moore" He was always fun and ran an amazing used and scholarly bookstore.

Dan was my best junior high school friend. He was an excellent golfer-a trait he inherited from his old man. We were junior members of the Oakmont Country Club, one of the best golf courses in the country if not the world. The club was closed on Mondays, so we could play as much as we wanted, sometimes as many as 36 holes! What great fun! Dan was the smartest kid in our class. The English teacher would read Dan's themes out loud to the rest of the students as an example of "how to do it right", embarrassing poor Dan and annoying the rest of us. Dan was quiet, a little shy, studious and sometimes intense. He loved books and reading. It is no surprise to me that he ran a first class bookstore. I only saw Dan a few times after he left Oakmont for Phillips Exeter Academy, but even after almost 50 years I never forgot what a great friend he was to me. God Bless him and his family.

Sad news. I worked for Danny for two years in both the Cambridge and Somerville locations. He was one of the smartest, sharpest and hardest working people I've ever known. It was an honor to work for him and learn some of what he had to teach. He did a lot of good for the world in the time he had here and will be missed.

My condolences to Dan's family. Dan and I sold books to each other for close to 30 years, and I considered him someone I could always go to with book related questions. We also talked alot of baseball. He loved the Pirates, but knew the whole game in detail. We would meet at the same Cambridgeport laundromat in more recent years and bemoan the demise of traditional used bookshops. I will miss him a great deal.

My thoughts and prayers are with Daniel's family and friends. He will be missed. My very first anniversary reading was at his bookstore for Cervena Barva Press. I am so sorry to hear this.

In a sense, McIntyre & Moore got me started down the road as a bookseller. Years ago, I was in the Navy and stationed in Newport, RI. One day, to get away from the noise of that Navy base, I drove up to Boston to wander around. In the afternoon, I happened by chance upon McIntyre & Moore in Cambridge. I found a book in there called The Golden Thirteen: Recollections of the First Black Naval Officers, which I bought for a more than reasonable price. The next weekend, I went back, and that book had been replaced on the shelf by another copy, which I also bought. I sold the second copy to a guy on my ship for a small profit, and to a certain extent, I was off and running. I went back to McIntyre & Moore as often as possible after that, and eventually, when they saw I was serious about books, they told me how to open book-buying accounts at Powell's Chicago; Texas Bookman; and Daedalus. After my time in the Navy, I started as a book seller in my own right, due in no small part to my visits to McIntyre & Mooore. I did not know either of the principals too well, but I thought from the times I spoke to Dan that he did seem like a kind soul. I will always have fond memories of them because of my discoveries there.
