Dr Riordan was my hero. He treated me for scholiosis for many years and suggested I wear the Milwaukee brace for 18 months in lieu of surgery so I could continue my schooling. I was 16 when I was fitted for the brace. I remember him coming in to the examining room when I was very young to show medical students my case in person. He was always soft spoken and diligent. It´s a sad day to find he has passed on but I´m forever grateful for his talent and kindness to the small child i was when I started going to see him.

I was his patient from age 2-16.
He was a wonderful human being.
I looked up to him & greatly respected him . I measure other doctors by the way he was with me as a patient.

Dr. Riordan by example and precept is the direct inspiration for me to become a hand surgeon. I was with him for only 6 months in 1960 when he would come to the National Leprosarium in Carville, La. His example, not only as a skilled hand surgeon, but as a wonderful human being, inspired me to eventually become a hand surgeon.
I told this to him, by phone once again, shortly before he died. He will be greatly missed both by me, and by all the scores of surgeons he has trained. The world is a poorer place without his light!

I first met Dr. Riordan when I was a medical student at Tulane in the mid-1960s. I attended his lectures in hand surgery and had contact with him in the operating room at Baptist Hospital. He was the earliest influence in my decision to go into Hand Surgery. What a fine surgeon and fine gentleman! Thank you, Dr. Riordan, for the impact you made on my life.

When I was a lonely intern in New Orleans and trying to decide what to do with my life, Dr. Riordon gave me direction, a purpose and the inspiration to become a hand surgeon. I will always have a special place in the heart for Dr. Riordon. I have learned a lot from him. My condolences go out to Mrs. Riordan and his family.

No words can express how much I miss Dan. I loved him as a second father and will never forget the blessing that he and Elanor have been in my life. He was truly one of the most remarkable men I have ever had the privilege of knowing. I love and miss you, Doc!!

Condolences to Dan's family on his passing. He was as fine a mentor that an aspiring hand surgeon serving a fellowship could have ever prayed to find. In the profession; and in life. I've posted some photos of Dan from 1975, when I learned so much from him. The weekly trips in his small airplane to Carville, Dan at the yoke, were memorable. If anything exceeded Dan's genius as a true pioneer in the field of hand surgery, it was this: His selfless devotion to patient care. May he rest in peace as those he mentored try to live up to being even a fraction of the surgeon and human being that he was.

I recently had the privilege if meeting Dr. Riordan. His nephew, Sid Huff, told me what a wonderful man he was and how he regretted not being able to visit often. I went to visit and met a kind, gracious gentleman who was very humble about his remarkable contribution to society, his students and patients. His legacy will live on through the lives he touched.

I adored Dr. and Mrs. Riordan and missed them a lot when they left Lambeth House. I send my "hugs" to the family.

No number of candles can even approach the light that Dan's presence shed....
Dr. Riordan was a private pilot who flew weekly to Carville, LA to perform surgery and render pro bono care to patients.

I didn't know Dr. Riordan but I know of this great man through his nephew, Sid Huff, who is a friend of mine. My sincere condolences to all of his family. Grief is the price we pay for love. I select that I live in GA because there is no drop down for anywhere at the other side of the big pond. I live in England.

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Dr. Daniel Clifford Riordan, MD our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Dr. Riordan. And to Dr. Riordan it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during WW-II while serving as a medical doctor in the U.S. Army. Dr. Riordan, you are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Dr. Riordan's family and loved ones.

This unique, incredible man was my 'uncle' for many, many years and I viewed him more as a father. He and my late Aunt Eleanor shared nearly forty years together and I was treated as a son. The world is a lesser place today with the loss of Dan, who had unique insights on a seemingly unending list of subjects.

I never had the privilege of meeting Dr. Riordan, but I know the love and respect that so many felt for him. I've heard him described as a mentor and a gracious and giving man. May his legacy continue to bless those who knew him, and those whose lives will be touched through the gifts he has shared.
