I'm going to miss seeing my Uncle Dan when he would come home for things like weddings and funerals. He came down for my wedding and my sisters wedding, and it was always nice seeing all of the siblings together again.

I remember when my Uncle Pablo passed away, he came home and he and my Uncle Cuna were sitting in front of me at the funeral home before the Rosary started. We spoke and caught up. As people were coming to pay their respects, people they had not seen in years, cousins, friends from the old neighborhood, Cuna and Dan would look at each other and say "Mira, hay esta la 'so and so'" because EVERYONE had a nickname. They would eventually come give my Uncle Dan a hug because they had not seen him in so long.

At my Uncle Cuna's funeral I remember my mom being worried he wouldn't make it to the funeral in time after flying in from Amarillo. I remember sitting there as a pall bearer hoping he would make it. During the funeral my Tio Dan and Tia Olga make it and it made me cry seeing him say goodbye to his brother. We ate dinner together that night and breakfast the next morning at Tia Maria's restaurant which was nice, seeing everyone together.

I remember once when Tio Dan came home and stayed with my parents, and we were sitting outside in the backyard. My mom had invited their cousin Johnny Monreal to come to the house. Counsin Johnny and Tio Dan grew up across the street from each other and were very close. He had moved to Michigan and worked in a factory for many years, and with Dan living in Amarillo they had not seen each other in many years. My mom didn't tell either one who was at the house. I remember my Uncle Dan rising out of his chair and extending his hand to introduce himself to Johnny and they took a second and recognized each other. The hug they gave each other was priceless.

The first thing I did Friday after coming home from the funeral was pass by their old neighborhood, I passed by the old Paint Shop, and passed by Sacred Heart Catholic Church, places they grew up in and knew well in times past.

All three of my mom's brothers, Pablo, Cuna and Daniel, were great examples of hard-working family men. They were great examples of how men should live their lives, and their examples should be followed.

Goodbye Tio Dan, I'm going to miss you.

What's the definition of a BIG?

It's all about perspective. I remember playing leap frog when I was a kid. That's the game where you leap over the back of another kid and try to jump as high and as far as you can off of their back. Little did I know, I was learning an important lesson in life. While running around carefree and having fun playing a game where 99% of the time the big kid ended up being the base or the one who sacrificed his body so that the rest of us could jump higher and go further.

Dan. I called him Dan and he called me C.J. I loved talking to him because he always shared his wisdom with me. All you need is some of momma's good chili, he would say to me. He was right. Mamm's chili is good! It's a little hot for me but I like it. You give that boy too much stuff, he said this to me about lil C.J. I should have listened more on this one, but nobody's perfect. All you need in some beans and rice, that's what I was raised on", he would tell me and I eat my beans just ask Becky.

As you see it's all about perspective. When we think of the big kid playing leap frog we envision an overweight kid. Size doen't make you big. What makes you big is being willing to sacrifice yourself for the benefit of others so that they can jump higher and go futher off of your back.

I will miss my father in law aka BIG Dan. I know he's in heaven now getting a good back massage because we've all been able to leap futher and higher in life because of his sacrifices..... He's the base. He was that big kid.
